Pamukkale

Pamukkale is located in inland from the Aegean coast in southeastern Turkey.

It has been used as a spa since the second century BC, and a complex system of canals brought the thermal water to nearby villages and fields. Its Roman ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pamukkale is known for its travertine features deriving from springs in a cliff around 600 ft (200 m) high. The calcite-laden waters have created a weird geological landscape made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins.

Travelers are allowed to swim in one of the pools for a fee.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

The Travertines

These are a set of bizarre calcium cliff bathing pools and petrified waterfalls overlooking the town of Pamukkale. Tough pollution control regulations require removing your shoes in order to walk on them (bring something to put your shoes in), so the travertines stay white as ever. This job is made tougher in winters when the water flowing down the chalky cascades will be freezing cold.
Archeological Sites
Lying just above the travertine pools is a large (12,000-seat) Roman amphitheater, known as Hierapolis.

In addition to the travertine pools, it is worth visiting the nearby remains of the ancient city of Aphrodisias. This is one of the best preserved Roman sites in southeastern Aegean.

A lesser known site, but one that holds a considerable biblical significanceis Laodikya, about 10 km from Pamukkale. This is mentioned in the Bible as one of the 7 Churches of the Revelations. Though it hasn't been reconstructed as much as the more famous sites, it is a good way place to experience the Roman history without the crowds and surrounded by beautiful scenery.
