Nemrut Dag

Nemrut (or Nemrut Dag) is a 7,000 ft (2,134 m) high mountain in southeastern Turkey.

It is famous for its summit area containing dramatic large statues created for what is believed be a royal tomb from the 1st century BC. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travelers mostly visit Nemrut from April through October, when weather conditions are more favorable.

The nearby town of Adıyaman is a popular hub for daytime car and bus trips to the site, while the more distant city of Kahta is the hub for overnight trips.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Nemrut Tomb-Sanctuary

The Mount Nemrut tomb-sanctuary was probably built for king Antiochus Theos of Kommagene, who believed he was a descendant of Apollo, in the first part of the first century BCE. The main feature is a tumulus (tomb hill) about 50 meters high, underneath which it is thought, the tomb itself is located.

The site is known for its big seated statues, 8 to 9 meters high of Antiochus himself, as well as Hercules, Zeus-Orosmasdes, and a few other greek and Persian deities, along with two lions and two eagles. Since their erection, the heads have toppeled from the bodies which remain at their original positions and lay scattered throughout the site. In more recent times the heads have been put back at their assumed original positions (albeit without the bodies) so they can once again face the sunrise and sunset.

Around the Tumulus are two main terraces; the big eastern terrace, and the smaller western terrace, which might have been used for religious and other ceremonies. A bas-relief has been found on the western terrace of a lion and the planets Mars, Jupiter and Mercury as they would have been on july 7, 62 BCE, the possible starting date of the complex' construction.
Natural
Hiking and Trekking
Mt Nemrut is a popular mountain to hike up, especially for watching sunrises. It's quite a distance from the mountain and it's best if you have your own transport or arrange a guided tour. The Summit is 2150 meter above sea level and provides a great view of the surrounding mountains and Ataturk lake.
