Cappadocia

Cappadocia is an area in central Turkey best known for its unique moon-like landscape, as well as unique cultural landscape that has developed.

The strange hill, canyon, and rock formations marking the area are the result eroding rains and winds over thousands of years. Many take on the names of mushroom-shaped, pinnacled, capped and conic formations.

The area has also been used for thousands of years as troglodyte communities, including an extensive network of underground cities, cave churches and houses carved into rocks that have made the area a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unique Cultures

Trogolodyte Communities

The historical setting, the rock-hewn churches and the unusual eroded landforms combine to produce a unique combination cultural and natural landscape. Some of the underground tunnels and caves reach 8 stories.

It is believed that the first signs of monastic activity in Cappadocia date back to the 4th century at which time, acting on the instructions of Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea (Kayseri), small anchoritic communities began inhabiting cells dug into the rock. Later on, in order to resist Arab forays they began banding together into troglodyte villages or subterranean towns such as Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu which served as places of refuge.
Natural
Geologic Formations
The eroded plateau of the Göreme valley is a spectacular example of the effects of differential erosion of the volcanic tuff sediments by wind and water. Typical features are pillars, columns, spires, domes towers, obelisks and needles that reach heights of 40 m. The major remnant of erosion, Akdağ (1,325 m), is the dominant feature in the valley. The nearby Erciyas volcano is still active with occasional minor eruptions.
