The Upper Svaneti is a high mountain region in Northwestern Georgia, inhabited by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of the Georgians.

The region includes Europe’s highest mountains, as well as beautiful ancient Svaneti villages filled with imposing stone watchtowers. In many cases, houses were used as both as dwellings and as defense posts against the invaders who plagued the region.

Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus, and the entire region a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Scenic Svan Villages

Svanetia is known for its architectural treasures and picturesque landscapes. The famous Svanetian towers erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries, make the region’s villages especially interesting and attractive. These towers usually have from three to five storeys and the thickness of the walls decreases, giving the towers a slender, tapering profile.

There are also dozens of Georgian orthodox churches. The village houses themselves are usually two-storeyed; the ground floor is a single hall with an open hearth and accommodation for both people and domestic animals, the latter being separated by a wooden partition, which is often lavishly decorated.
Natural
Alpine Mountains
The landscape of Svaneti is dominated by mountains that are separated by deep gorges. Most of the region which lies below 1,800 meters (5,904 ft) above sea level is covered by mixed and coniferous forests. Four of the 10 highest peaks of the Caucasus are located in the region.

The highest mountain in Georgia, Mount Shkhara at 5,201 meters (17,059 feet), is located in the province. Other prominent peaks include Tetnuldi (4,974 m / 16,319 ft), Shota Rustaveli (4,960 m / 16,273 ft), Mount Ushba (4,710 m / 15,453 ft), and Ailama (4,525 m / 14,842 ft).
Hiking and Trekking
The surrounding Caucasus offer everything from short day hikes to multi-day treks, to serious climbing expeditions. Several of the best Svaneti trekking routes begin in Mazeri village. Full-day treks provide access to backcountry waterfalls and glacier trekking.
