Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a spectacularly scenic desert valley located in southern Jordan.

The region is isolated, with few areas of settled life, leaving the area wild and natural. The area combines desert with weird geologic formations (eg, rock bridges) and ancient rock art.

The only permanent inhabitants are several thousand Bedouin nomads and villagers. Travelers can arrange to stay overnight in Bedouin camps to create multiday adventures.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Deserts
Wadi Rum is a mass of soaring cliffs and sandstone and granite mountains (jebel in Arabic). Apart from the Bedouin goat hair tents, the only structures are a few concrete shops and houses and the fort headquarters of the Desert Patrol Corps The genuine attraction of Wadi Rum is the desert itself, most commonly seen by four wheel drive, pick-up truck, or on camel. While many visitors only spend a few hours in the Wadi, it is worth taking a guided trip of several days duration, typically staying overnight in Bedouin camps in the desert.

Sand Dunes. Wadi Rum has both white and red sands. Visitors can climb up and either run down or sand-board.
Geologic Formations
Jebel Burdah (Big Rock Bridge/Arch): On many tours you only view this from a distance, but it is possible to climb up to this rock bridge if you have a guide and a reasonable level of fitness. Climbing takes 4-7 hours (depending on your experience), and requires a whole day tour.

Jebel Umm Fruth (Middle Rock Bridge/Arch): A lower rock bridge which is featured on many tours and can be easily scrambled onto. The climbing takes 5-15 minutes.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: Although most people can only count five, this is an impressive rock formation near the Visitor's center.
