Jerusalem is the largest city in Israel and one of the oldest cities in the world.

Located in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea, it is a holy city to the three major Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

The city is a mix of old and new, and there are many areas where the first century rubs shoulders with the twenty-first century and picturesque historic neighborhoods intermix with recently built office towers and high-rise apartments.

The Old City and its Walls form a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is an especially spiritually significant part of the city. Other areas are known for their cosmopolitan contemporary cultural life.

Holy City to Three Religions

Jerusalem is a holy city to Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Broken down geographically:

West Jerusalem is the iJewish-Israeli part of Jerusalem, also known as New Jerusalem. It is the modern commercial heart of the city, having become the focus for development in the capital from the time of the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.

East Jerusalem is, roughly, the Eastern side of Jerusalem, and is the location of what many Palestinians view as the capital of Palestine. Most of Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian populations of approximately 250,000 have long lived here, but since the territory was taken by Israel from Jordan during the Six Day war of 1967, it is now home to nearly 200,000 Jews.
Historic Landmarks
Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. The City of Gold, as it has come to be known in Hebrew, is a fascinatingly unique place where the first century rubs shoulders with the twenty-first century, each jostling for legitimacy and space, and where picturesque "old" neighborhoods nestle against glistening office towers and high-rise apartments.

The atmospheric historic core of Jerusalem is surrounded by Ottoman period walls, filled with sites of great religious significance and daily hustle-bustle. Note that sites are often specific to one religion, being used by adherents of a particular religion for worship or exhibits, may bar nonmembers from entry or praying on the grounds. This is especially true of mosques.
