Bahrain (North) (photo by Peter)
Bahrain’s North Region includes some of the country’s most scenic areas, as well as two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The northeastern region, on Muharraq island, is known for its historic pearling economy. Historic legacies include historic buildings in Muharraq City, offshore oyster beds, and the Qal’at Bu Mahir fortress.
The northwestern region is centered on the Bahrain Fort and the historically important harbor it protects. In addition to fortifications, the distinctive palaces of Dilmun had an impact on architecture in general in the region.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination

Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).
Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.

Click highlighted activity to see details.Cultural | ![]() Qal’at al-BahrainThis is an impressive Portuguese fort which gives the whole site its name, qal’a (fort). It is located at the top of an artificial mound created by many successive layers of continuous human occupation from about 2300 BC to the 16th century AD. About 25% of the site has been excavated, revealing structures of different types: residential, public, commercial, religious and military. They testify to the importance of the site, a trading port, over the centuries. The site was the capital of the Dilmun, one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region. |

Combination | ![]() Pearling EconomyA World Heritage Site inscribes Bahrain’s traditional pearling culture. The traditional sea-use of harvesting pearls from oyster beds in the Persian Gulf shaped the island of Bahrain’s economy for millennia. As the best-known source of pearls since ancient times, the Gulf industry reached the apex of its prosperity at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. What remains today are seventeen historic buildings in Muharraq City and three offshore oyster beds. The site is the last remaining complete example of the cultural tradition of pearling and the wealth it generated at a time when the trade dominated the Gulf economy (from the 2nd century to the 1930s, when Japan developed cultured pearls). |
