Coiba

Coiba National Park is a large protected island and marine sanctuary located off of the southwest (Pacific) coast of Panama. Both the island and its surrounding coral reefs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island is about 75% forested, while its underwater world includes whales, tiger sharks, sea turtles, angel rays, giant schools of fish, and many species not yet known to science.

Facilities on the island are limited, with no restaurants or hotels. The only overnight facility is at the ANAM ranger station on the island, with several modest two-person cabins with air conditioning.

Many travelers visit the island and reefs from resorts and hotels on the mainland that are close enough to make Coiba a day trip. Two popular bases are Boca Chica and Santa Catalina (which offers its own diving opportunities).

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Natural
Diving
Coiba's unique location protects it from the damaging winds and other effects of El Niño, allowing it to sustain the uninterrupted evolution of new marine species including whale and tiger sharks, sperm whales, sea turtles, angel rays and giant schools of fish.
Snorkeling
According to a Smithsonian project: "It's hard to imagine, while snorkeling around a tropical island that's so close to the United States, that half the animals you see are unknown to science.”
Ocean Wildlife
Coiba's underwater topography is linked by the underwater Cordillera mountain chain to Coco's and the Galapagos Islands. Scientists from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute have proclaimed it an unparalleled destination for discovering new species. Also with it come the larger fish/mammals such as humpback whales, sharks, whale sharks, orcas and more. Some 760 species of fish have been recorded here, including snappers, barracuda, amberjack, and three types of marlin.
