Tikal is a large archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northeastern Guatemala.

It was perhaps the largest and most important cities during the Mayan Classic Period. Today it is surrounded by jungles and known for its remoteness. Some of the temples are still being uncovered, and visitors can watch archaeologists at work.

The sight of the temples poking through the jungle canopy is spectacular, and visitors can climb to the top of a few of the temples and get panoramic views.

Tikal is vast, making hiking an essential part of the experience, but the trees provide shade along the wide trails as you trek from one ruin to the next.

The jungles around the site also shelter a diversity of wildlife, including large populations of monkeys and birds.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Combination
Archeological Sites
Tikal was a Maya city of great power and size, the largest of Maya cities during the "Classic Era" over 1000 years ago. Amongst the many Maya sites in Central America, Tikal is perhaps the most breathtaking because of the scattered impressive buildings which have been restored in an area with many more ruined buildings still enveloped by the jungle.
Natural
Tropical Forests
One of the pleasures of Tikal is its remote, jungle setting. There are plenty of tall trees to provide shade along the wide trails as you trek from one ruin to the next, and great vistas from on top of the ruins. Among the wildlife that can be seen are spider moneys, Toucans and other exotic birds, and Coatimundis (a raccoon-like mammal).
