Caracol & Cayo District (photo by Charlemagne)
Cayo district is located in the central inland region of Belize and is known for its Mayan ruins, caves, tropical jungles, and extensive river system. The main town and travel hub is San Ignacio, which has its own attractions.
Cayo District includes Caracol a large ancient Maya archaeological site, located about 24 miles (40 km) south of San Ignacio.
It also includes several cave systems. The best known is Actun Tunichil Muknal, a Mayan sacrificial burial site near San Ignacio that is contained entirely within a cave system, with access involving of climbing over rocks and swimming through water, creating an unusual adventure.
Cayo District also has several rivers that are popular for tubing and other activities.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination

Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).
Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.

There is a good shared kitchen and seating area and a bench up on the roof for good views of the whole city. We didn't have AC but felt the fan in the room was more than adequate. Ensuite was good & showers have lots of hot water. Nice staff and Hari made us a lovely Indian curry on our last night. The location is great The manager is great His cooking is awesome ! The food! Amazing food, fresh ingredients, and all local cuisine. We loved every bite!
The room was comfortable. No space wasted on some large lair you're never going to use. Simply your bed, a shelf behind the bed with a lamp, a small dresser, a chair, and a suitcase holder. Plus the bathroom with a shower stall. It was clean and after our first night it felt like our home away from home.
The pool was amazing. Surrounded by palm trees and an assortment of singing birds, it felt great every single day after our adventures! Service was super friendly! Clean and quiet atmosphere. Lots of birds around the lodge. We saw blue crowned mot mot while eating breakfast just feet away from us. Also Keel Billed Toucans, parrots, green and brown jays, thicket tinamous, and many more species. The swimming pool was excellent and the air conditioning and water pressure in the rooms was great. Elmer the on site manager was always around and answered any questions we had. Very friendly staff and they kept the grounds and rooms very clean. The chef prepared the best meals and quite a variety. Money well spent of meals. They provided overnight security officer for added protection. Really close to San Ignacio but at the same time, when you are there, it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere in the Jungle. You will need a car or taxi (5min) to get to San Ignacio. The owner (Claudia) will happily help with arranging this. Rooms are really nice and excellent breakfast and dinner. Probably the best or one of the best places we stayed during our 2.5week road trip in Belize. Great value for money. Great cabin. Great location. Claudia and Franklin the best. Their information and assistance were invaluable to a most enjoyable stay and exploration of interior Belize. Claudia and Franklin were amazing hosts, ensuring that every aspect of the stay was attended to. The cottages exceeded every expectation. Very relaxing beautiful setting. What a perfect place in a peaceful jungle setting. Gorgeous bungalows with all the amenities. Everything was spot on. Hosts were great, and breakfast was delicious. (HUGE pancakes!). Loved the dogs there too. We will definitely come back to Vanilla Hills on our next trip to Belize. The property is beautiful and peaceful, the building architecture is first rate. The individual lodges were secluded and reflected the eco lodge living perfectly. Loved the food, surprising to find such wonderfully cooked meals in the jungle. I was looking for the perfect location to please my partner's desire for a 40th birthday in the jungle all to ourselves... And found it! When we arrived at Macaw Bank we were greeted with the beauty and sounds of the jungle. Ron and Al made our stay amazing. From being very informative, to fun, to making sure that our tours were arranged and we got to see as much as possible... All was perfect! They even had the best 40th party for my partner ever-complete with yummy food and cake and balloons! My partner thought it was so perfect he wants to move there! The cabins were very nice-we even had outdoor showers under the glow of the moon. Ron and Al have done a great job of making sure things are wonderful for their guests, and we had an amazing stay! Would recommend it to anyone! The staff at Macaw Bank Jungle are the best! The food is amazing and we loved hanging out in the bar area. Ron and Al are the most gracious host and so helpful about things to do in the area. Trust them, they know the area well. This was our first Jungle experience and we couldn't have had a more enjoyable and relaxing stay. We flew into Belize City and rented a car so we could explore at our own pace .(4 wheel drive is best). This worked perfectly for us. Highly recommend this place! Perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. Next visit we will stay onsite more, although there is so much to see. Can't wait to revisit. Wonderful hosts. Ron and Al went out of their way to make sure we had a good stay. Food is excellent. Cabanas are in the jungle, and are clean and comfortable. Good base for exploring cayo region. Peaceful immediate surroundings, full of birds and wildlife. Delighted to recommend this lodge. Terrific wild life is on the property. Staff is extremely attentive to your needs. The location is ideal for people that want a real jungle experience. The bird watching was magnificent. I stayed for four nights, and will return for at least a week. There are numerous activities for any traveler. I went zip-lining and "cave-canoeing: with a guide (Carlos). He was extremely knowledgeable about Mayan history and geology, cave systems, hydrogeology, etc. I also went to ATM (Actun Tunichil Muknal) Archaelogical reserve. The only way to describe ATM is Magnificent and breathtaking. Ron at the Macaw Jungle Lodge made all the arrangements for me after my arrival. When I left, I felt as I was leaving family. SUPERB!!!!! Friendly, helpful and very nice owners who made the stay a memorable one! The property is about 25 mins out of town and is mostly quiet and at the end of a road with no traffic. Western GuesthouseWestern Guesthouse![]() $50 GUEST REVIEWSGreat place to stay in San Ignacio. Clean, quiet, close to everything, and very wonderful staff. Highly recommend. The Western Guesthouse is in a great spot. Near downtown but just away from all the noise. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean. There is a kitchen and front room that is really nice. Internet worked well. A family-run property located in the heart of little San Ignacio. Good restaurants a block or two away. Highest recommendation for Serendip, a Sri Lankan restaurant of all things. Jovian at the guesthouse is very personable and helpful. I had my choice of rooms when I arrived around noon, and by 6:00 they were all filled up. Free water, use of the kitchen if you want. Quiet. TV has a couple of U.S. channels. Wi-fi strong and reliable. Amazing value. Off the beaten path but an easy bike ride to the main area on the island. No loud neighbors. Beautiful and simple. It was perfect for us. Very romantic. Very clean & well maintained guest house close to the center of town but on a quiet street. Friendly managers. Access to full kitchen a big plus. Comfy bed, shared kitchen and living room facilities, very close to the city center It was so very comfortable. Just like being at home. Close to everything. Very quiet in the evening. Even had a pleasant welcome note along with some fresh picked flowers on our bed upon arrival. Well-located in quiet area close to downtown restaurants, taxis, market, park, buses. Very friendly, laid-back owners. Room was generously AIR-CONDITIONED and had all that was needed, and was serviced DAILY. Large communal kitchen with fridge, microwave, oven, utensils and table+chairs. Communal balcony is a useful sit-out area with evening breezes and shade. Some street parking is possible. Great value at my time of year. We've never experienced this kind of hospitality...ever...anywhere. Our schedule was tight and the staff communicated clearly and kindly about our options. They completely embody the word 'accommodations.' Our room and the site as a whole were very secure. Once we laid out our personal linen (what we do no matter where we go), we had a great night's rest. The common areas are comfortable and spacious. The price was quite reasonable. The center of town is but a few steps away from grocers, restaurants, souvenir shops, tour offices and the sweet folks of San Ignacio. Without hesitation , we will return and stay here. Yvette , the host was very friendly and helpful. Let's guest use the kitchen and provides coffee. | $50 | 9.2 |

The bed was amazingly comfortable, best mattress of our trip so far! The owner was an absolutely lovely lady, so welcoming and helpful. Great shared kitchen facilities and a lovely terrace area with hammock and books where you could hang out with other travellers. Also an internet shop, hairdresser and great bookshop with lovely lady (who does batik workshops) downstairs for your ongoing travel requirements! Super clean also, the cleaner was always working, bless her! Good wifi. Hot water and decent shower pressure. Good location, mostly quiet (see other box), just a short walk to the centre of 'town' with a great fine-dining restaurant Crave a few doors down. The staff is very helpful, nice, funny... we really felt "at home". They also help you to organize tours or a transport to your next destination if needed. We felt very secure.
Free water-tank and coffee in the lobby area. Good water pressure in the shower!!
Located in the centre of the pedestrian area (main street with tour operators, shops, restaurants and bars) - but very quiet at night.
The Hotel is brand new, so there are some things still under construction on the second floor (but no noise at all). The rooms are equipped with a very nice and modern bathroom, big double bed with good matress, nightstand and chairs - some more furniture will follow, they just opened up 2-3 months ago. The location is fabulous for walking around downtown San Ignacio. The hotel is located on a walking-only street. Shops and market minutes or seconds away. Lots of free parking in their private garage under the hotel. Everything is super new and fresh as they have only been open a few months. The beds were awesome! All super clean! One in our party of 6 left their camera behind in a drawer in their room. The owner quickly contacted us and is sending by courier to our new location. Great customer service! In the lobby there is complimentary bottled water, coffee, toast and butter. Overall, this is a fantastic choice for downtown San Ignacio! Leo and his staff were amazing. Made us feel right at home. Gave us good advice in places to eat and things to see. This property is just getting off its feet and although the furnishings in the rooms were a little scarce, the bed was extremely comfortable, the room was clean, the water was hot and the air conditioning was a bonus. We would recommend this property in the heart of San Ignacio to anyone who is looking for a comfortable central local to explore this area. Please note: We drove in with a mini van. The secured parking was a bit of a challenge to maneuver with this larger vehicle. Although they were very gracious and helpful with aiding our parking, I would not recommend relying on the parking facilities if you have a large vehicle. This is a new hotel with quality air conditioning, ceiling fans, wonderful beds and great TV. The hotel is a work in progress, so furnishings are spartan until more cash flow allows for more room furniture. Proprietors Leo and Jeannine are warm, friendly and helpful, offering us room in a large fridge to keep our drinks cold. They brewed fresh coffee in the morning free for guests and there was nothing they wouldn't do to make our stay pleasant. Location is excellent and helpful advice is always available. very nice staff, very good location, clean rooms with cold AC.Value for money is good for belize not a bargain though. The staff was very friendly and most accommodating. Leo made some great recommendations for dinner restaurants. Location was central and easy to walk to everything. It was nice to be able to have cold water, coffee or tea anytime and was nice to have access to the refrigerator for storing personal items Central location, good for your budget, very clean, helpful staff accueil exceptionnel de la part de la direction qui offre à toute heure de la journée de l'eau en bouteille fraiche. Close to the nature and not far from downtown (5 min walk)! This place is awesome! The location is great. Just a short walk from the town center of San ignacio. The staff is very polite and friendly. The room was spacious and clean and the ac was nice and cold. The property is also on a nice piece of land surrounded by pretty fruit trees and plants which are kept nicely manicured and well maintained. Also, we extended our stay to 3 nights instead of 1 and they had no problems accommodating us last minute. Overall, nice place and good value. Would definetly recommend :) The owners were kind and friendly Fresh great coffee when you wake up Friendly dogs !! Organic fruit trees on property. I would come here again if I visit. We were on the second story. There's a wrap around deck that I pretty much spent hours on just looking out over the property. At night there were fireflies in the trees and bats swooping around.... This place was my idea of heaven. The sun setting. The view. The DECK. The town of San ignacio is literally a 10 minutes walk away, there's an amazing farmers market as well I think on Fridays that's just a few steps away. Again... this place was heaven. I miss it. Bing was super friendly and made us feel really at home. We decided to stop an extra couple of nights in order to get to ATM which had been closed by hurricane Earl and were very happy to stay at River Park Inn with a very peaceful setting and lots of bird life in the surrounding trees. It is about 800m out of the town centre but this suited us perfectly and we got 4 great nights sleep. The staff was super helpful giving tips on the excursions and booking them for us, and the room was just what we needed: comfortable bed, clean room and bathroom and warm shower. Also, there was warm coffee every morning, a great view from a shared balcony and a super nice garden to hang out. If you are planning to do excursions during the day it's the perfect place to stay. It is right next to San Ignacio but you have the feel and sound of being in the country. There is a variety of fruit trees that you can pick fruit to have a picnic near the river. If you plan to visit San Ignacio you must stay here. The family run hotel was great. Safe, nice 10 minute walk from town, helpful, clean, simple. Very friendly and cooperative people. Especially the owner mr. Bing is a true inspiration. I really like that it is quietly located but still close to town and the coffee in the morning. :) | $50 | 8.7 |
Venus HotelVenus Hotel![]() $14 GUEST REVIEWSThe location couldn't be better, adorable hotel right in the heart of San Ignacio. Very safe, clean, and colourful, perfect for the backpacker who likes a little more privacy than a hostel. Beds were by far the most comfortable I found in Belize, and the common balcony area has great views over the bustling activities of Burns St, hilarious people watching.
The family (Elsa, Abraham and their son Christian) were so friendly and welcoming, we felt immediately at home. They also hooked us up with their relatives who do tours. Would def recommend booking activities through the hotel, Ben and his brother "Juice" were excellent guides, good prices, solid advice for some of our independent treks, great all around.
Oh, and if you book at Venus you can also use their sister hotel's (Midas) beautiful pool with cascade falls and bar.
Would highly recommend this place, can't say enough good things about it. We loved the location of the hotel. It was very safe and very easy to get around the town. The staff members were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were very clean and comfortable, especially for how inexpensive the hotel was. Staff was so very friendly and helpful. Great location. Great value Perfect location really nice staff . Night manager Abraham is great taxidriver also very honest and knowledgeable The staff (Abraham and Ceasar) were both incredibly friendly and helpful to a point of excellence, makeing phonecalls for us to organize our days, giving us information, providing us with room when all places in San Ignacio were full. Cheap and clean! Close to everything. The staff were soooo helpful and nice. They provided plenty of info on tours and transport. My wife also accidentally left her purse there when we checked out and the staff emailed us promptly asking how they can help. They express posted it to our next hostel without any hassle. We loved our stay in san ignacio! I absolutely loved this hotel. It looks kind of sketchy from the outside and I am a jerk for thinking it wasn't going to live up to decent standards. Super friendly and helpful staff. Right in the town of San Ignacio so you don't have to walk far after you drink too much. Loved the artwork in the building too! Very comfortable, nice room in perfect location surrounded by everything. Also, the owner was super helpful on recommending things to do that would be cheaper than just doing a tour! A very nice relaxing spot to explore the city of San Ignacio. The staff was treated you like family. It was a great time. Thank you for the great experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful and you can buy a meal for dinner most nights, and the food they cook is delicious Bellas was a cute little hostel just off the main strip of San Ignacio. Easy to find and great staff. They have an adorable dog and there's a kitchen area and lounge area that's great for hanging out and meeting other people. There's also a quiet spot on the roof where you can go relax and lay in one of the hammocks. Really friendly staff, great atmosphere, 2 minute walk to restaurants, bus station etc. Would definitely stay here again. Hostess could've been more accommodating and sincere about the breakfast, tours and culture. Rainforest Haven InnRainforest Haven Inn![]() $54 GUEST REVIEWSRainforest Haven was the perfect place to stay in San Ignacio. The rooms were lovely and clean and we had access to a kitchen with a view of the city and a rooftop deck where we could read in the hammocks or snack at the table. The staff were fantastic-friendly and helpful. It was a great deal! The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They set up excursions for us with some great guides. The owners work the inn and are also very friendly people - so helpful! The inn is comfortable and spacious - very nice sized room and the rooftop veranda has an amazing 360 degree view of the town and surrounding area. There is also a shared community kitchen available to use if you like purchasing and cooking your own food! San Ignacio is lovely and the inn is very easy walking distance to everything. The facilities were great and the building and room were very comfortable. The room was nice and airy and the a/c worked well when we needed it. The rooftop terrace was wonderful and had a great view of the city. Giving us a phone on which we could reach them in case we got lost was a good idea. There is a little place called Trin's kitchen about a block down the hill that had amazing prices and some of the best stuffed jalapenos around. It was mostly frequented by people from the neighborhood so it was a nice break from other tourists. The Rainforest Haven Inn is the perfect accomodation to me! The staff is totally friendly and helpful. The room and the bathroom offers enough space for us and it was super neat with a daily cleaning. Besides the roof deck is amazing. You have a great view over the city and the jungle. You can have a sun bath or just chill in a hammock. We are so happy to find that place! Great little hotel in the middle of San Ignacio. Clean large rooms. Great airconditioning. Comfy beds. Provided safe parking for our car. Walking distance to restaurants. Fabulous shared large kitchen and rooftop terrace. Good access to caves, Caracol, Tikal, Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. We were 2 couples with a car. Stayed in 2 rooms. Very spacious room with 2 big beds, great views, excellent kitchen available, hammocks on top terrace, and washing lines so caught up with all the washing. Jorge, the owner, is a really nice person and made our stay in San Ignazio as easy as it could be with his recommendations and his help. The hotel is great: cozy, comfortable, clean and cheap - a great relation price-quality! They don't offer breakfast, but the kitchen and the terrace are great and there is a very nice and complete supermarket literally 2 doors down, as well as various restaurants. The location is great: central and safe, yet quiet and relaxing! This hotel is an excellent value. The staff was great and the location is within easy walking distance of the center of town. Stop down at the local bakery for breakfast! Also you can walk to the Cahal Pech Mayan ruins in 10 minutes or take a class in Mayan chocolate making right next door. If you going to take any tours (and we did them all) - take them from San Ignacio and NOT Belize City. You will save yourself hours on the road. All the people in town were open and friendly; saying good morning, etc. It was refreshing and you immediately feel comfortable. Is this a five star place - NO. Is this a solid, clean, great value in a good location where you can have fun and see how people in a small town in Belize live - YES This hotel is located in a great location! The staff is very friendly and the hotel is clean and comfortable. The best part is the rooftop which has a wonderful view with hammocks to lay in! The room was comfortable and spacious. The location was fantastic, in the centre right by the best restaurants and yet also slightly tucked away next to a Mayan chocolate shop. Dorita was extremely helpful - and so were the other staff members. However Dorita was not only accommodating, helpful, and efficient but she was also very generous with her time and made sure that any question you had was seen to - be it regarding tours into Guatemala to telling you about the town. I gave her the challenge of finding me a last minute trip to Guatemala (with specific difficult requests!) and was so impressed that she had researched so much into it. She phoned at least 10 tours in order to find me one. Very friendly and thorough lady. Thank you! I also loved the terrace upstairs where you could chill - the hammock was perfect especially at sunset. There was also a kitchen if you had fruits you'd bought from the market! | $54 | 9.1 |

Jump into their new infinity pool and look over the green countryside! We booked all our tours - airport transport, ATM, tubing, zip lining, xinantinich, great rock falls, chocolate making with the hotel. They have a relationship with GoMaya tours so we got a great price and amazing guides. We went in the low season - which meant more personal attention. The room was spacious and the WiFi excellent and the restaurant served some delicious meals - just take the daily special - you won't be disappointed. Clean and friendly staff. Martha's GuesthouseMartha's Guesthouse![]() $80 GUEST REVIEWSMarthas has large clean rooms with comfortable beds. The staff are very friendly and helpful. A great assortment of breakfast. I would definetly recomend Marthas Guesthouse to anybody looking for accomodation in central San Ignacio. Great price right in the centre of the town. Huge beds and nice staff. Great for three of us. Located in the center of town, lots to see and do within walking distance and close to public transit. Secluded outdoor restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. Staff friendly and helpful, service was good and lots of choice on the menu. We ate breakfast there every day. The room was large, bright and cheerful, very clean and there was lots of room for unpacking - a large wardrobe, side tables and desk. They offer laundry service. The tiled bathroom was smallish with a pedestal sink and nowhere to really put your toiletries. We used the shelving unit just outside the bathroom so it was not really inconvenient. We also had a small balcony off our room. AC was wonderful as it was really hot when we were there. Hotel has a real family feel about it. Enjoyed our stay and would go back. We stayed at Martha's for a few days as our base in San Ignacio. No issues with our stay. Pros: Centrally located, free parking, well decorated rooms, super clean, A/C is a boon in Belize -- even in peak winter! Staff was friendly and helpful with questions, room was spacious and clean, and you can get from the lobby to the restaurant without going outside when it's raining If you want to be central this is a good choice. Really Central so easy to get around. Great breakfasts at the restaurant and spacious rooms that had everything you would need. The owners also live on site and were great to talk to. Elmer and Jose were extremely helpful in aiding us in setting up tours (ATM), transportation to our next hotel, as well as taxis to San Ignacio and to the Guatemalan border.
We loved our stay at this great lodge. Food was sooo yummy! Friendly staff and excellent tours! ATM Cave tour was amazing Super friendly staff. Excellent local sourced organicaly grown veggies. Great meal choices prepaired by masterful chefs. Family owned and operated. Exudes a very warm and positive vibe. Awesome location, phenomenal food and friendly and helpful staff. Atmosphere can't be beat. Staff were very helpful. Great chefs at restaurant Maya Mountain Lodge is set in the jungle but just minutes from town. Very quite and secluded. The feeling of being at home relaxing with friends, sharing food...surrounded by stunning nature! The location by the river is beautiful and Marty is such a fantastic host. Great base to visit the Mayan sites in the area. Fantastic experience and lovely people who go out of their way to host, guide and entertain. The location and environment are second to none. + Marty and the others went well out of their way to make us and other guests feel at home at their relatively new facility, with completion of the bar as we arrived and recruitment of a great chef for terrific value dinners ($12 pp) + Nice decorations and vibe in the cabin and main dining area with communal hammock, Wifi etc + Enjoyed the spacious grounds with rope swing into the river (although it could be cut shorter, as the slack ripped up my torso) and 1 hour tube trip upstream led by Eric The atmosphere was very laid back, surrounded by nature. It was a nice place to meet local folks, play some music (thanks Eric!) and wake up to the sound of nature. The days that we had breakfast there, it was delicious! Thanks Marty! The staff really helped us out with a last-minute trip to Tikal (the guide and transfer were great!) and transfer to the airport (with a stop by the Belize Zoo) (Thanks Ian and Teddy!!). The property is large and has labeled trees, inner tubes and a rope swing into the river. Wifi works in a comfortable common area and in cabins closer to the common area. The location is so beautiful, peaceful, and secluded. The river is great for swimming and the staff was wonderful. They helped us book the tours we wanted and had all the information we needed. We did not want to leave. There is so much to do and see nearby. This is a wonderful place to experience Belize. Fantastic staff, charming and comfortable cabanas in a beautifully maintained riverside setting. Fantastic! Authentic Belezian food and musical culture...lots of opportunity for adventures with top notch guides well known to the management. I highly recommend you check it out! Bobby, is the best my children remarked it was more like staying with famiy then a hotel. Food was wonderful as was the property. Beautiful lush property right on the river. Serene relaxing environment. Nice breakfast. Bob and Sylvia are very nice people. I'm so glad we chose to stay at Bullet Tree Cabanas! The location is incredibly beautiful and feels like a secret hideaway. When we first arrived, we went straight down to the river and immediately saw a river otter. Bobby and Sylvia do an incredible job of making guests feel welcome and at home. They have a fridge stocked with water and beer for guests and Sylvia can make you a delicious breakfast to enjoy while you take in the beautiful surroundings. The cabanas are rustic, but I love the traditional building and loved listening to the critters and rain at night. I can't say enough good things about this place. I felt so lucky to have chosen this place over staying somewhere in San Ignacio which has none of the jungle charm I was looking for. Also Bobby hooked us up with finding a great tour guide and driver back to Belize City. We never felt rushed and truly enjoyed our stay here. Make sure to go down to the dock and night and enjoy the stars! We can't wait to come back! Bob was absolutely wonderful! The best host on our entire trip... We had the whole property to ourselves, it was paradise. Even if other couples had been there, the property is set up to be private. We also had dinner there one night, and WOW!!! The best Belizean dinner of our trip, and the price was incredibly fair! We loved our stay and will be back again! Beautiful , natural location on the river. Cute cabanas. Wonderful attention from the couple who runs owns and runs the place, Bob and Sylvia; we felt very "at home". Fun and interesting conversations with Bob. He arranged a fascinating trip to Tikal, in Guatemala, where we traveled with only one other couple. Bob and his girlfriend are amazing and will take good care of you Bob is amazing and took care of us like we were his family! Cocopele InnCocopele Inn![]() $54 GUEST REVIEWSLucy was very friendly, helpful and gave us a wealth of local info, i.e., great eating places
Our room had AMPLE space, a dbl & a twin plus a sitting area. Shower/ bathroom had new tile.
Lucy told us she brewed coffee every day ..we opened our door and there was the coffee across the hall. She also provided bottled 5gal. Jug of H2o. Fill your bottles and put them in fridge she also provides.
Also provides washing machine for laundry.
This is our last night of our 6 night visit to the Belize area which consisted of 2 Caye Caulker, 3 San Ignacio and 2 Benque Viejo.
Cocopele tops...within walking distance to downtown area and to town square where a taxi will drive you to Benque for $3 BZE and the bus for $2 BZE. Bus,no ac, but was half full and opened windows provided cool breeze..oh yes, driver was playing a George Jones cd, which really made it fun. Lucy is an amazing host! Very friendly and helpful. We were running late from Belize City and she was there waiting for us. The rooms are very clean and the beds were just right. She even let us store bags when checked out. A very great stay. Easy walking distance to the market, river, Cahal Pech, bus stop, restaurants and ATM. Walking in San Ignacio is either up or down: one walks down from the Cocopele to town, up to Cahal Pech, then vice versa on return. It's easy to snag a taxi if you don't like to walk. The interior of our room was spacious and laid out like a small apartment. The flatscreen tv was a treat after several weeks without television. The common kitchen is exceptionally well appointed; all of the appliances are modern and functional. Lucy, the manager, is cheerful and always willing to answer questions. We stayed for 7 nights in July 2016 in a double room with AC and private bathroom. The room also benefited from access to a shared kitchen. The property is conveniently located in Santa Elena, just over the metal bridge. You can walk to San Ignacio town with all the tour agencies and restaurants in 5-10mins, everything is close. The location is on the main road so there is some traffic noise but we didn't find it too bad. The owners were also installing new windows whilst we were there to improve the sound proofing. The room was large with an extra single bed, and living area with sofa, desk, TV and microwave, like a mini apartment. The AC was modern and quiet and the electric shower had hot water. Wifi was good, a little patchy at times. Lucy the owner lives on site and is always on hand for advice. She was so kind and helped us out immensely as we wanted to get married in Belize. She even made us a cake on our wedding day! Lucy bent over backwards to provide exceptional service. Free washing machine provided, as well as clothesline. Cooking facilities, dishes, pans, etc., provided. Very comfortable room with good shower, cable TV and use of a kitchen and laundry facilities. Close to town and plenty of close eating places and markets.Staff are really friendly and helpful. Lucy is a wonderful host and the property is only a 10 minute walk to town. The host was excellent. Lucy helped us out wherever she could. The staff-lady was very friendly and helpful. The room was hudge. Also the laundry was very good - the best we had since 5 months travelling! (our clothes smelled wonderful) Close to the hostel are some very good, small and cheap local restaurants. Lucy made us feel right at home and was available and helpful. Location within easy walking distance of downtown San Ignacio was great! Could do laundry for free with a small charge for dryer. The villas could not be improved upon. This was an amazing place! All of the amenities...Wifi, TV with thousands of free movies, reverse osmosis drinking water filtration system, AC. These are things you won't find in most places in San Ignacio, trust me. Exceptionally well appointed villa with everything you need to enjoy your stay. The views are stunning. The location is close to enough to town to get supplies that you need yet, situated on the top of a large hill so it is quiet and feels like an amazing retreat. Ken and Virginia we well versed about the area and had great recommendations for things to do and where to eat. Great service and a very memorable experience. Probably the best place in the world to get away from everything without sacrificing anything; quiet, great scenery, great bed, no-fiddle a/c, secure, big TV with a million channels, great kitchen, unpretentious, and wonderfully helpful hosts who are retired hoteliers. Recommended tour companies, restaurants, and markets and were spot on; Emil from Elite Tours (Sergio Jr and Sr from Eva's restaurant) should teach every tour guide ON THE PLANET how to be a guide! Really. Beautiful location, on top of mountain overlooking beautiful scenery in all directions. Our amazing hospitable hosts, the breathtaking view, and the impeccable gorgeous villa. This place was wonderful! Virginia even took us around the city to help us get acquainted and helped to book us a last minute tour. Above and beyond to make our stay perfect! We took one of their excursions and had a person guide (Eddie) who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the sites we visited. The staff was amazing. They gave me a personal tour and catered to my every need. Ask for Andy or Brandon to give you a tour. They are very knowledgeable. The food was excellent. Property was clean, well maintained, and located in the perfect location for tours and trips to town. The bar and restaurant leave nothing to want for. The best part of our stay, however, was the staff. A truly great and professional group. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit Belize. Warm and friendly atmosphere from the first moment of arrival. Very obliging and attentive staff. Excellent and varying food (e.g. original Maya food event). Personal welcome by General Manager Wolfgang. Unforgettable planting. Excellent food ....fabulous grounds, very attentive staff. Best resort stay EVER! Exceptional service. The meals were cooked perfectly especially the pork chops. Peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. Very warm and friendly staff. We loved how accommodating and polite the staff was! My husband and I had massages and they were each exceptional. The concierge suggested and arranged our excursions based on our likes and dislikes. the onsite restaurant was delicious every meal and the Mayan cooking class is a must. Excellent hotel and location. Staff is very helpful and very accommodating. Couldn't have asked for better rooms, service, tour arrangements, and meals. Highly recommend. Very nice room and friendly helpful staff, All of the staff are welcoming and friendly, offering great advice on area sights. Everything was very clean and well maintained. Located a few minutes walk to downtown San Ignacio, with a full range of shopping and dining opportunities. If you're up for a challenging adventure do not miss the ATM Cave tour. Trinity was delightful and informative and made us feel very welcome. The cocktails and wine were delish. Property was amazingly beautiful and tranquil. Clean, comfortable room with cold AC and nice beds. The pool was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay there again!! The staff was wonderful esp.Carlos! Our room had a balcony with a hammock. The dining room is a balcony overlooking a lovely garden and pool area. All the food was locally grown and the beef is from their own ranch. The guides, who took us to Tikal and Barton Creek were excellent. Don't forget to visit the Green Iguana Project. The pool was amazing and the staff were all very helpful. Whenever we needed suggestions for activities or local restaurants, the concierge and the front desk staff always provided us with excellent information. The room was spacious enough and the king size bed was super comfy. Good size King room, garden view balcony with hammock. Good A/C and also a dehumidifier. Inn the Bush Eco-Jungle LodgeInn the Bush Eco-Jungle Lodge![]() $125 GUEST REVIEWSFood was delicious. Roeni and Rob were great. The property is beautiful and we'll kept. Rough road in but the food and the views were amazing. There is lots to do in the area. The privacy and natural setting are very restful. Our bungalow was clean and comfortable and looked out to the mountain. The grounds were beautiful. The owners and staff were friendly and informative about what to do and see in the area. We ate breakfast and dinner there. The meals were delicious and of local cuisine. We did not have time to use the pool, but looked inviting. We spent three nights at the eco-lodge and enjoyed it. I stayed at many places during my Belize holidays but the Inn the Bush lodge was the best of all. The cabanas and the area are thoughtfully and lovingly designed and spotless clean. There wasn't the tiniest bug in my cabana although situated in the middle of the jungle. The owners Roeni and Rob are very friendly and helpful and do their outmost to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The meals were delicious, Roeni is such an excellent cook! I enjoyed every moment of my stay. Roeni & Rob own the facility and Roeni is the host/chef (incredible food!) and both are hosts (incredible hosts!). The place is beautiful, the rooms are impeccable, the hosts are wonderful and the food Roeni prepares (breakfast and dinner) are first class all the way! | $125 | 9.0 |
Mystic River ResortMystic River Resort![]() $225 GUEST REVIEWSThe whole staff was so friendly and ready to help, The staff is extremely attentive. It's nice to get to know them over the course of your stay. The grounds are incredible. You can walk miles of trails or hang out in the hammock overlooking the river. The massages on sight are fantastic. They have a ton of tours that can be arranged for you. A lot of the food is grown on or comes from the property. Belize is not known as a foodies Mecca, but the food at the Mystic is varied and I found it to be very good. They have a fun drink menu to make your way thru!! This is not a cheap or inexpensive place to stay. The prices are a bit high, but the quality of everything you are getting is high. Even though it is a resort, it is in the middle of the jungle. So you will experience everything that comes with that...miles of very bumpy roads, some bugs & very warm days (but cool nights!!). But that's what makes the adventure tons of fun. Can't say enough about Mystic River Resort. Fantastic rooms, amazing staff, beautiful area, incredibly friendly and attentive service. Absolutely a 10! One of the nicest places we have ever stayed. This place is special from the location, the staff, the accommodation, to the food (fruit and veg grown in their own garden), the trails, the flora, the fauna and the river. Oh and did I mention the staff who are super helpful and friendly. The attention to detail is excellent from the morning coffee at your door when you wake up in the morning to the umbrellas in your room, it is the rain forest after all! This place is awesome. We chose mystic for our honey moon stay. It was more than what we expected! Literally, everything about it was great! Everyone was very friendly and helpful, especially Tom and Nadege, the owners. The food was very good and there was a dinner special every night that always was special. At breakfast we were entertained by toucans on a nearby platform eating watermelon rinds and other fruits put out for them. Our cottage was spacious and comfortable with a nice balcony over looking the Macal river and with a fireplace which we enjoyed a couple of nights. The grounds were well maintained and so peaceful. The private bungalows and balconies just felt like we were the only one's there. Very calm and quiet. The food was delicious and the staff was so accommodating and kind. Great and fantastic place! The rooms are like tree houses with birds in the trees all around. Quiet and nature abounding. Beautiful birds and iguanas. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and there are extra touches like home-made chocolate scrubs to try. There seemed to also be a range of excursions to choose from. There are hammocks and places to chill with the view of a river. The resort itself is off the beaten path; there are other hotels and resorts along the river but to get to Mystic you have to drive off the main road and then on a dirt road to get to the quiet oasis. This was a plus for us as we were looking for some chill time after a busy first week of holiday. There is a spa as well; the masseuse doesn't work every day but is on call for appointments whenever a guest makes the request. Also, many of the staff were very friendly and the owner was super responsive and helpful in making arrangements for the transport to Mystic River from Guatemala and then onward to the coast. Friendly and accommodating staff. Easy to set up any tour with little notice. Peaceful and relaxing. Well maintained, beautiful property. Staff was super friendly and approachable, very helpful and pleasant, and knew us by name. They accommodated for everything we asked for. I loved the option to have a basket with hot beverage and fresh banana bread delivered right to our door in the morning. | $225 | 8.9 |
Crystal Paradise ResortCrystal Paradise Resort![]() $95 GUEST REVIEWSBeautiful setting by the Macal River. The family that owns and runs Chrystal Paradise is wonderful and they make you feel like part of the family. Good food and the guides are very knowledgeable. I'd recommend this place and I'd love to come back, but this time spend a little longer there. Great food, excellent atmosphere and really nice staff. Run by locals. clean clean clean great local food Everyone was friendly everyone was polite all the staff aimed to please whatever we asked for they were kind and knowledgeable and shared any information about the resort and about living in Bielize. We were very pleased that we chose a resort owned and run by a family that actually lived in Belize from generation to generation. This was exactly what we were looking for… Genuine flavor of the style. The true culture of the rain forest in Belize. The food was really good, and the service was a nice addition. The staff was very friendly! Knowledgeable guides, staff very accommodating to all requests. VERY good value for the money. Good food with local flavor. Fruit trays attract many birds. Direct access to the Macal River, Birding was excellent on the property. The staff was very friendly and the meals were great. Resort grounds were well landscaped and neat. This is a family owned resort. The service and friendliness of all we dealt with was great. From extra blankets to scheduling tours, from the food to the friendly atmosphere, we couldn't have been happier. By the time we left we felt like part of the family. Carolita is a great organizer and a wonderful cook. Meals were very affordable and presented family style. The grounds are well maintained and beautiful. Very peaceful! The birds are fed fruit at the balcony in the eating area every morning. Many beautiful birds came to eat! This is a great resort to "bird" at and from. The day we left I asked Carolita if she could pack a lunch for us since we wouldn't have time, on the way to the airport, to stop at a restaurant for lunch. She had suggested a stop at the Zoo on the way. After visiting the zoo our driver (her cousin) spread a table cloth over a picnic table and served the lunch Carolita had packed. Wonderful! We felt so special. Would we go back? Absolutely! Lovely natural setting with jungle, farm animals, wildlife all right on site. Rooms open to the breezes (screened). Self-serve bar was great. Meals were traditional Belize. Family owned and run. Authentic atmosphere and good cabanas. Lovely birds on food table. Everyone so friendly and helpful. | $95 | 8.8 |

Windy Hill ResortWindy Hill Resort![]() $111 - $136 GUEST REVIEWSRooms were very nice. Grounds were beautiful and peaceful. Restaurant and bar were very good with great local cuisine and great service. The grounds, pool, room, and restaurant were all exquisite ! The welcome drink was a nice touch. Ping pong would've been fun but we didn't have time. I loved every single tho g about the place. The service and workers were polite and attentive. I would recommend this place to all off friends. Great location for our destinations. We visited Tikal which we had the staff at Windy Hills help coordinate and then we arranged for an ATM tour for ourselves. Windy Hills is close enough to town that it is a quick drive though far enough out that we felt away. The grounds were beautiful and the staff was courteous and eager to help. We had included the breakfast every AM in our stay. Choices were excellent and each breakfast tasted great. I wish I could remember names better to acknowledge each person who helped make our stay so memorable! The hut I reserved was big enough for everyone. The beds were fairly comfortable. The bar had great prices and amazing drinks! Everyone was super friendly. The staff was excellent, friendly and helpful. We greatly enjoyed the Windy Hill tour of Caracol, which included stops at the Rio Frio cave and the Rio On waterfalls. The food at the restaurant was quite good. Loved the cabana, and the pool was awesome. The pub had pool and games. Staff was very kind and friendly. They went out of the way to help me when I got hurt through no fault of the hotel. Nice welcome rum punch. Loved our little stand alone cabin. It had great decor and comfortable beds, as well as a hammock on the front porch! Paradise! The staff was super friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent. I liked the layout of the place. It has a nice pool which we had to ourselves one day. The cabin was very comfortable and had both air conditioning and fans. Loved the location - no mosquitos due to how breezy the area is. Peaceful and quiet except for the occasional woodpecker or howler monkey. Great service and friendly staff. The front desk was really helpful in organizing tours and giving out restaurant suggestions in town. plenty of space for the kids to play outdoors, the pull was really nice as well. | $111 | 8.3 |
Cahal Pech Village ResortCahal Pech Village Resort![]() $103 GUEST REVIEWSOscar the bartender was amazing. Staff was really friendly, views were Ana's by and rooms were clean. Unbelievable views from our Room, a very pleasant staff, short walk to visit the ancient ruins. Everything. The staff were amazing! Oscar the bartender, ian and Hubert our drivers were amazing, our server (so sorry to have forgotten your name!) and the front desk staff! They arranged our ATM Cave tour which was an experience of a lifetime with Pacz Tours. Patrick Warrior is a guide you should request. The location is insane too. 100% safe and easy walk into town. You do not need to take a cab at all. Perhaps at night you could but still a safe area. The on site restaurant was also deelish. (Which is why we didnt need to take a cab at night) My friend and I were travelling just the 2 of us and the staff and locals made all the difference! Breakfast was excellent, Staff was amazing and helpful. Location was clean and beatiful. Couldn't ask for much more than this. Also it was close to Cahal Pech ruin...just next door, as a matter of fact. The staff was excellent especially the wait staff. The view was spectacular. The coffee and fry jacks at breakfast were outstanding. Went on road trip with friends and wthis was the best place we stayed. Everthing absolutely great! When we arrived our room was under maintenance. We were upgraded to a suite that overlooked all of San Ignacio. Everything was just as wonderful as you could get. We especially loved Oscar! He took such great care to treat us like family. Hands down, he is amazing!!! The meals were excellent! Make sure to try the fish jerk and the pineapple chicken! yummy, yummy!!! To top it all off, you are literally right next to Cahal Pech Mayan ruin. We recommend Cahal Pech Resort to anyone. We even extended our stay by two days there. The grounds are so beautiful. The view beautiful and the staff gracious. The view from the resort was amazing. Sitting by the pool and enjoying a drink was a great way to unwind at night. The view of the town was amazing, and great sunsets from the lobby plaza. Cabana lodges were great, had large room with vaulted ceilings made of natual wood. Screened in area as well, like it was your own home. Breakfast was very good and responibly priced. Staff is excellent. | $103 | 8.1 |
