Verona

Verona is a mid-sized city located in northeastern Italy’s Veneto region.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for both its archeological ruins from the Roman period (including a large arena) and its historic center that shows the transition of Western European art from late medieval to early renaissance styles, with its rich offering of 12-Century churches and art museums.

It is also known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and what is reputed to be (but isn’t really) Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta), with the famous balcony, a popular tour stop.

Historic Landmarks
The historic city of Verona was founded in the 1st century B.C. It particularly flourished under the rule of the Scaliger family in the 13th and 14th centuries and as part of the Republic of Venice from the 15th to 18th centuries. Verona has preserved a remarkable number of monuments from antiquity, the medieval and Renaissance periods, and represents an outstanding example of a military stronghold.

Verona today contains elements representing its 2,000 year history: the Roman period, Romanesque, Middle Ages and Renaissance which have survived intact until the 19th century. The walls surrounding the city prevented 19th century development such as industry and railroads within the historic city. The urban structure, as a result, shows exceptional coherence and a large degree of homogeneity.
Castles and Forts
Verona's military importance has also left city fortifications and castles:

Castell San Pietro (St Peter's Castle). Climb the steps up the hill above the Roman Amphitheatre to the Castell San Pietro. This former Austrian barracks dates back to the Austrian occupation of the left bank. While and while the building is not open to the public, the views from the hill over Verona are spectacular. Go up in the early evening and enjoy the sunset.

Castelvecchio. A 14th-century, red brick, fortified castle on the banks of the river Aldige. The main castle buildings house the city art museum, which is packed with a rich collection of medieval sculpture and Renaissance paintings. The extensive castle ramparts are great for exploring. The Castelvecchio has an adjoining bridge over the river which is open all the time - walk over the bridge for some fantastic views of the castle on the river.

Castle Scaligeri.

The Arena

An enormous, spectacular Roman amphitheater, crumbling on the outside but still functioning today. It was erected in the 1st Century AD in an elliptical shape, and is the world's third-largest amphitheater to survive from antiquity. Much of the outer ring was damaged during the earthquake of 1117 but the inner part is still intact. If you can, plan your trip during the Opera season and see a performance in the Arena. Outside the opera season you can visit it during the day.
