Tuscany is a region located in west-central Italy, several hours drive north of Rome.

Among its many appealing features are its many historic hill towns, beautiful architecturally and surrounded by vineyards producing Chianti and other wines.

These towns, with their town centers, castles, villas, and other features, are found throughout the Tuscan countryside. Most are located within a few hours of each other, making for easy multi-day tours.

A good place to start is the city of Pienza. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while its larger surrounding area is a second UNESCO World Heritage Site, Val d’Orcia, cited for its beautiful landscapes.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Historic Landmarks

Val d'Orcia

The landscape of Val d’Orcia, a World Heritage Site, is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, have inspired many artists, and . come to exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes.

Pienza

Pienza is its own distinct World Heritage Site, located on the crest of a hill overlooking the Val d'Orcia, 53 km southeast of Sien. It was the town in which Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior and an interior in the late Gothic style of south German churches.
Combination
Vineyard Region
Most of the important traditional wine producers are located along the axis formed by Florence and Siena. The most famous region is Chianti, along with neighboring Montalcino and Montepulciano. In general red wines are better known than white wines.

Public wine tours are not as well established here as in many other countries. It helps to manage tours through local tour agents who know the owners.
Natural
Biking
Tuscany offers first-class biking, with roads and trails that can take visitors from village to village, among exquisite scenery. Note that much of Tuscany is moderately hilly. Note also that summers can be very hot and local drivers can be a menace.
