The Dolomites are an especially beautiful part of the Alps, located in northeastern Italy, near the Austrian border.

The region has a strong Germanic influence, in both language and architecture.

The central travel hub of the Dolomites is the scenic town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, reachable by vehicle or by scenic railway.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is a year-round alpine resort with ski lift network for winter sports and extensive trails for hiking and biking. Climbing is also popular.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Alpine Mountains
The region is totally composed by high mountains and their valleys. The best known part of South Tyrolean Alps are the Dolomites with the Schlern (2,662 mt) or the Rosengarten (3,002 mt). The Dolomites are located in eastern South Tyrol while the highest mountains are in western South Tyrol with the Ortler Alps. The Dolomites offer some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the planet with their striking appearance, which has evolved over many millennia as erosion and weathering shaped what were originally under-sea coral reefs.
Winter Sports
The Dolomites hold a number of important ski resorts near the Austrian border.
Hiking and Trekking
This Alpine region can offer a lot of cultural highlights, both large cities and small picturesque storybook villages - and huge areas of wild nature, including the most important Italian national park and many more regional parks. Hikers will see wild alpine meadows, deciduous and evergreen woods, lunar landscapes, high altitude terrain, alpine lakes, dramatic walls, and soaring peaks.
