Mont Saint Michel

Mont Saint Michel is a small island located just off the coast of northwestern France.

The island is best known as home of the spectacular Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Michel, situated at the peak of the island and surrounded by the winding streets and convoluted Medieval architecture.

The entire island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its strategic fortifications since ancient times, and its abbey since the eighth century CE.

Adding to its fortifications, and to the pleasures of visiting the island, are its tidal movements, which have stranded attackers and travelers alike.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Historic Landmarks
The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it: On top, God, the abbey and monastery; below this, the great halls; then stores and housing; and at the bottom, outside the walls, fishermen's and farmers' housing. Its unique position of being an island only 600 metres from land made it readily accessible on low tide to the many pilgrims to its abbey. By capitalizing on this natural defence, the Mont remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War with a small garrison successfully defending it against a full attack by the English in 1433.

Abbey of Mont Saint Michel (L'Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel)

Once a humble little monastery, the island and its fortifications have effectively grown up around this. During the French Revolution, the abbey was used a prison, and an extensive restoration was required to restore it. A few prison-era showpieces, like the human hamster wheel used to lift supplies in and out of the complex, have been kept.

Mass is celebrated daily, except Monday, at 12.15PM.
