St Andrews

St Andrews is a small town (population 18,000) located on the east coast of Scotland, facing the North Sea.

It was historically the Ecclesiastical capital of Scotland. The cathedral was the most important in Scotland during the mediaeval period, and the Bishops of St Andrews lived in St Andrews Castle.

St Andrews hosts the University of Scotland, the oldest in Scotland, which dominates much of the town.

St Andrews is perhaps best known for its role in the origins of golf, as reflected in its landmark Royal and Ancient Golf Clubhouse.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Historic Landmarks
Although small, St Andrews has a number of important historic landmarks. The three most important are:

1. St Andrews Cathedral and St Rule's Towe. St Andrews was the Ecclesiastical Capital of Scotland before the reformation, and St Andrews Cathedral was the most important cathedral in Scotland. Constructed between 1160 and 1318, it later fell into disuse. Its picturesque outline remains, however, including stunning towers.

2. St Andrews Castle. St Andrews Castle was built in approximately 1400 and was where the Bishops of St Andrews lived before the Reformation. It has also served as a fortress and even a prison, but fell into ruin in the 17th century. Its remains have a beautiful location next to the sea.

3. The University of St. Andrews. Founded in 1413, it is the oldest university in Scotland. Its campus, which is spread throughout downtown St. Andrews, features many interesting historical buildings, including the 16th Century St. Salvator's Chapel.

Unusual Local Feature

Ancient Home of Golf

The game of golf had its beginnings in this little Scottish town, and even non-golfers should consider a stroll along the perimeter of the very first golf course, the old course. Located on the edge of the course is the imposing Royal and Ancient Golf Clubhouse.

Playing St. Andrews' Old Course can be a difficult accomplishment, often involving exorbitant greens fees and a long waiting list. Golf enthusiasts may wish to contact The Royal and Ancient Golf Club well in advance. As an alternative, visitors can play a round on one of St. Andrews' many other courses.

The British Golf Museum offers a cheaper and more sedate alternative.
