Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Salisbury Plain in south-central England.

While most famous for its circular formation of enormous vertical stones, the entire site is quite large and contains many other structures from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

There is no access to the stone circle itself – visitors are guided around the monument by roped pathways and on-site attendants. A few tour operators from nearby Salisbury can arrange for early morning or evening access that allows visitors a chance to enter the circle.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Salisbury Plain

The Salisbury plain surrounding Stonehenge features several rolling hills and dry river valleys that allow for pleasant walks without too much trouble.

The landscape boasts several outstanding Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments that can be reached on foot a short distance from the famous Stonehenge.
Archeological Sites
Stonehenge is located at the center of a World Heritage Site of over 2000 hectares that is considered one of the most archaeologicaly rich in Europe. It is home to some of the most important Neolithic and Bronze Age finds and structures in the UK, and contains some 200 scheduled monuments.

Evidence indicates that the area around Stonehenge has been occupied since around 8000BC, but it was during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods that the vast majority of the monuments around it came to be built.

Today there is an annual calendar of events, often scheduled to coincide with sun patterns through the gian stone megaliths as they change through the seasons.
