Cornwall

Cornwall is located in extreme southwest England, in an area considered the mystical home of the legendary King Arthur.

It is known for its long coastline and beautiful scenery, as well as a mild climate (for England) and diverse Celtic heritage. It is the home of “Land’s End” — the extreme tip of the country where Britain meets the Atlantic head-on.

Cornwall was a significant contributor to the industrial revolution, famous particularly for its tin-mining, and this has made the region a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travelers can find the remains of mines, engines houses, smallholdings, ports, harbors, canals, railways, tramroads, and other industrial innovations that shaped the region and the world.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

World Heritage Site: Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape

Much of the landscape of Cornwall and West Devon was transformed in the 18th and early 19th centuries as a result of the rapid growth of pioneering copper and tin mining. Substantial remains from this era demonstrate the contribution that Cornwall and West Devon made to the Industrial Revolution. Cornish technology embodied in engines, engine houses and mining equipment was exported around the world. Cornwall and West Devon were the heartland from which mining technology rapidly spread.
Natural
Beaches
Cornwall is known for its beaches and (relatively) mild climate. Beaches include surfing spots, taking advantage of a decent Atlantic swell. Most popular is Bude, with good facilities. Other beaches include Summerleaze Widemouth bay, Crackington Haven, Padstow, and Newquay.
Hiking and Trekking
The most famous of Cornwall’s trails is the South West Coast Path, running along the coastline of Britain’s southwest peninsula. The trail takes walkers to busy towns, remote cliffs, beaches, heaths, farms and fishing villages. Walking along it is a great way to experience the region in all its variety. The Cornish section is the most scenic, particularly around Penwith and the Lizard.
