Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s first national park. It hosts a diverse range of ecosystems and some spectacular landscapes.

Tongariro holds dual UNESCO World Heritage status for its significance as both a cultural and natural area. The cultural significance comes from the park’s important Maori cultural and spiritual associations, while the natural significance comes from its outstanding volcanic features.

The park has three active volcanoes, as well as several extinct. It also contains two major skifields.

A popular trek during the summer is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The nearest towns are Turangi, National Park and Ohakune.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Combination
Unique Cultures
Tongariro National Park in 1993 became the first property to be inscribed on the World Heritage List under the revised criteria describing "cultural landscapes." The mountains at the heart of the park have cultural and religious significance for the Maori people and symbolize the spiritual links between this community and its environment.
Natural
Volcanoes
The park has both active and extinct volcanoes. A good place to start to get the lay of the land is the Whakapapa Visitor Centre, at the heart of the village.
Hiking and Trekking
Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This is by far the best-known trek in the region. The track can be very busy, especially during the summer months. Getting an early start can help to avoid the crowds. A more intensive option than the one-day walk is to do the three-day northern circuit. This begins at Mangatepopo or Whakapapa, heads over the crossing, then makes a short detour to Blue Lake, then down to the Oturere Valley, which has lava formations.

From the Visitor Center there are several shorter treks (half day or less). Especially nice is Taranaki Falls (approximately 3 hours), which takes through forest and across scrubland and even across the lava line of past volcanic explosions.
