The Bay of Islands is located off the northeastern tip of New Zealand’s North Island.

The region is rich in history as the place where the first missionaries settled in the early nineteenth century.  It is also rich in outdoor activities on both water and land, including kayaking and bushwalking through ancient forests.

The Bay is made up of three islands:

1. Paihia. Known as the jewel of the region, with safe waters and superb beaches, Paihia is a base for exploring the Bay of Islands.

2. Kerikeri. Overflows with orchards and galleries, fruit and art. Along the roadside, orchards sell their oranges, kiwi fruit and avocados

3. Opua. For those arriving by sea, the Opua port is where the boats live – yachts, launches, ferries and runabouts of every description

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Waitangi

Located on Paihia island, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds were gifted to the nation by Lord and Lady Bledisloe in 1932. The Waitangi National Trust Treaty Grounds give a unique and fascinating insight into New Zealand's historic past. New Zealand's most significant document, The Treaty of Waitangi, was first signed here in 1840 between a few Maori chiefs and the British Crown, and became the basis for life in New Zealand as it is known today.

The Treaty House sits on a vast, peaceful estate which includes a fully carved Maori meeting house, one of the largest Maori war canoes and a Visitor Center and Gallery.
Natural
Hiking and Trekking
Among the best places for forest walking is Puketi Forest. Together with Omahuta Forest, this forms one of the largest contiguous tracts of native forest in New Zealand's Northland. It is home to the fourth largest living kauri (with a height 50.9 m, or 167 ft).

There is good beach walking on Paihia island.
