Tasmania is Australia’s only island state. It’s unique forests are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tasmania’s long isolation from the Australian mainland by the Bass Strait has resulted in the evolution of its own unique plant and wildlife species,.

Its interior is filled with parks and reserves protecting its unusual ecosystems. While challenging to access, its rewards also include extraordinary scenery.

Most of Tasmania’s population is concentrated around the south east and north coasts.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Forests
Tasmania is the most mountainous state of Australia, with its tallest mountain being Mount Ossa at 1,617m (5,305 ft). Tasmania’s Central Highlands, West Coast, and Southwest are all mountainous forested areas, the majority of which are protected inside national parks. Because of their inaccessibility, these areas are home to dense forests and some of the last temperate rain forests in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hiking and Trekking
Tasmania’s wild interior provides challenging hiking (or “bushwalking”), rewarded by a unique landscape for flora and fauna. Many trails involve overnight camping, so come prepared. To learn more about local flora, see Nontropical Forests. To learn more about fauna, see Wildlife.
Wildlife and Plants
Among the exotic mammals to be found are the Tasmanian Devil, Platypus, Echidna, Sugar Glider, Eastern Quoll, and Forester Kangaroo. Wallabies and Pademelons are everywhere throughout Tasmania, while Wombats can be found in many national parks.
