The Ningaloo Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia, along the East Indian Ocean.

The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is 260 kilometres (160 mi) long. It is Australia’s largest fringing coral reef

The area contains a high diversity of habitats that includes lagoon, reef, open ocean, the continental slope and the continental shelf – including intertidal systems such as rocky shores, sandy beaches, estuaries, and mangroves.

The most dominant marine habitat is the Ningaloo reef, which sustains both tropical and temperate marine fauna and flora, including marine reptiles and mammals.

Its travel facilities and activities are especially targeted at families and groups, who can camp or stay close to the beach and live in and out of the water, swimming, fishing, and coral viewing.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Beaches
Ningaloo has beaches galore, many of them interconnecting ocean and arid coast to form aesthetically striking landscapes and seascapes. The coastal waters host a major near shore reef system and a directly adjacent limestone karst system and associated habitats and species along an arid coastline. Intertidal systems such as rocky shores, sandy beaches, estuaries, and mangroves are also found within the property.

The most dominant marine habitat is the Ningaloo reef, which sustains both tropical and temperate marine fauna and flora, including marine reptiles and mammals.
Snorkeling
Ningaloo Coast is one of the world’s great destinations for snorkeling. The Ningaloo is a true fringing reef, extending from the land up to a few kilometers out to sea, and much of it is accessible from the coast. The reef sustains both tropical and temperate marine fauna and flora, including marine reptiles and mammals.

Among the easiest to access snorkeling is at Coral Bay is right off the beach. Visitors can find high quality snorkeling, along with glass bottom boats and dive tours.
Ocean Wildlife
The reef is rich in coral and other marine life. Ningaloo is most famed for its whale Sharks, which feed there from late March to July each year. (Note that these are harmless to humans.)

The reef is also rich in coral and other marine life. During the winter months, it is part of the migratory routes for dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and humpback whales. The beaches of the reef are an important breeding ground of the loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. They also depend on the reef for nesting and food. The Ningaloo supports an abundance of fish (500 species), corals (300 species), molluscs (600 species) and many other marine invertebrates.
