Lord Howe Island is crescent-shaped, approximately 11 km long and 3 km wide at its greatest width.

The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed as a result of its unusual combination of beauty and biodiversity.

It forms the top of an extinct underwater volcano and seamount, projecting above the surface of the ocean. It has the southern-most coral reef in the world, with a population of approximately 350 people.

Only 400 tourists are permitted to visit the island at any one time.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Natural
Diving
Having the most southerly coral reef in the world, Lord Howe is a rare example of a zone of transition between algal and coral reefs. Many species are at their ecological limits, endemism is high, and divers can find unique assemblages of temperate and tropical forms cohabiting.

There are several dive centers located near the island airport.
Snorkeling
High-quality snorkeling can be found at a number of shallow-water locations around the island. Ned’s Beach is considered one of the best spots.
Wildlife and Plants
The islands support extensive colonies of nesting seabirds, making them significant over a wide oceanic region. They are the only major breeding locality for the Providence Petrel and contain one of the world’s largest breeding concentrations of Red-tailed Tropic bird. Iconic species include endemics such as the flightless Lord Howe Woodhen, once regarded as one of the rarest birds in the world, and the Lord Howe Island Phasmid, the world’s largest stick insect.
