Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country’s second largest city, with a population in the city of over 2.6 million and in the metropolitan area of6.5 million.

Hanoi has seen extensive development in recent years, with many new buildings, and has become a genuine world city today, with great food, interesting local theater, and other cultural features.

But because it was largely unscathed from the decades of war, it retains historic neighborhoods and buildings that recall the past. Among its most famous landmarks is the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cultural
Theater
Hanoi is the center of traditional Vietnamese theater. Two places are especially recommended:

Ca trù Hanoi Club. This is a center for Asian traditional arts and aristocratic court music. Ca trù is an unique and fascinating genre of chamber music in Vietnam which traces it roots back to the 10th century. The atmospheric combination of sitting in a temple courtyard, imbued in soft lighting and sipping Vietnamese tea while ca tru is sung leaves a pleasant impression.

Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. Live musicians accompany folk legends from Vietnamese history, told with wooden men, women and dragons, dancing and splashing on the face of the water.
Historic Landmarks
Hanoi’s Old Quarter Hoan Kiem District is Hanoi’s Old Quarter. It is filled with narrow streets with sidewalk vendors and people out for a stroll. It is close to the city’s main park, Hoan Kiem Lake, which is the favorite leisure spot.

In a different part of town lies the World Heritage Site: Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. Its inscription say: “The Thang Long Imperial Citadel was built in the 11th century by the Ly Viet Dynasty, marking the independence of the Dai Viet. It was constructed on the remains of a Chinese fortress dating from the 7th century, on drained land reclaimed from the Red River Delta in Hanoi. It was the centre of regional political power for almost 13 centuries without interruption. The Imperial Citadel buildings and the remains in the 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site reflect a unique South-East Asian culture specific to the lower Red River Valley, at the crossroads between influences coming from China in the north and the ancient Kingdom of Champa in the south.”
Museums
Hanoi is filled with a diverse range of museums that cover everything from traditional Vietnamese art to ethnograpy of Vietnam’s diverse peoples.

The most famous (or infamous) is Hoa Lo Prison – aka The Hanoi Hilton. This prison was built by the French at the turn of the 20th century, in classical French prison design and is where the French imprisoned and executed many of the Vietnamese revolutionaries. It was later used to house American POWs, although much less emphasis is given to this part of its history.
