Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, photo by Rinto Jiang

Chiang Mai is the main hub of northern Thailand, with a population of over 170,000 in the city itself and 1 million in the metropolitan area (making it Thailand’s fifth-largest city).

Located on a plain at at a little over 600 feet (300 m), Chiang Mai is surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, where hill tribe trekking is popular.

It is much greener and quieter than the capital, Bangkok, and cooler as well, yet maintains a cosmopolitan air, including a significant expatriate population and those moving from Bangkok.

Inside Chiang Mai’s remaining city walls are more than 30 temples dating back to the 1200s, in a combination of Burmese, Sri Lankan and Lanna Thai styles.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Temples
There are hundreds of temples in Chiang Mai and its outskirts, with a dozen stand-outs of historical or architectural significance within walking distance of each other in the old part of the city. Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai exhibit a mixture of Lanna Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan and Mon architectural styles that reflect the varied heritage of Northern Thailand.

The most famous temple is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, which overlooks the city from a mountainside about 15 km away. Built in 1383 during the Lanna Thai period, the temple offers great views over the city. Visitors may hike or take a cable car.

Unique Cultures

Hilltribe Villages

There are roughly a dozen distinct hilltribe groups in Thailand, most of which live in northern Thailand and play an important part in the cultural tapestry of the hills that dominate the region. Visiting hilltribe villages as part of a trek or tour, is a popular activity in Chiang Mai although most within 1-2 days travel of Chiang Mai are likely to be touristic. Those seeking a more authentic experience need to hike a few more days to get further from the city.
Natural
Lowland Mountains
The entire northern region of Thailand is made of hills. This is the land of the hilltribes, and increasingly of sizeable cities such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The hills help to separate areas from each other, but they also mean that hiking in the region invariably involves lots of ups and downs.
