Bangkok is Thailand’s capital and largest city, as well as a major gateway to other parts of Southeast Asia.

It is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and is filled with canals and other waterways that are well worth visiting.

Bangkok is a major city, and enjoys cultural features like great food, theater, music, and even Thai kick boxing (Muay Thai)

The initial experience can be an assault on the senses, as visitors are immediately confronted by the heat, pollution, and traffics. But the experience is relieved by the irrepressible smile that accompanies most Thais.

Cultural
Global City
Bangkok for centuries was a small trading post. This all change when Ayutthaya was burned by Burmese invaders. At that point, King Rama I (the first monarch of the current Chakri dynasty), turned it into the capital of Siam in 1782. Today it functions as Thailand's spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic center. Just under 14 degrees north of the Equator, Bangkok is tropical (hot and muggy) most of the year, but it is also one of the most traveler-friendly cities in Asia. It is Southeast Asia’s main airline travel hub, and a great place to buy inexpensive tickets to other countries in the region.
Temples
Out of Bangkok's hundreds of temples, the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun make up the top three:

The Grand Palace is actually a temple, as well as a collection of highly decorated holy buildings and monuments. One of its buildings houses the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddha image of Thailand.

Nearby is Wat Pho, home to the world's largest reclining Buddha image.

Take the ferry across the Chao Phraya River to Thonburi for the outstanding Wat Arun. The main structure is about 60-88m high and it is surrounded by four smaller prangs. It is one of Thailand's most picturesque temples, and is engraved on the inner part of all ten-baht coins.
Combination
Unusual Local Feature

Bangkok's Canals" The Chao Phraya River is the landmark in Bangkok, but surrounding it is a matrix of canals that are living neighborhoods. This can be done on your own, taking public express boats that ply the canals regularly. You can get off anywhere between Thewet and Sathon (Taksin) piers and visit local neighborhoods and landmarks. Or visitors can take an organized canal tour, using specialized boat trips, which start at the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya and head through the backwaters of Thonburi, taking in Wat Arun, the Royal Barges National Museum and a floating market.
