Rice Terraces

The Philippine Rice Terraces are located in the Cordillera mountain range in the north of the island of Luzon.

Built 2000 years ago and passed on from generation to generation, the rice terraces reach an unusually high altitude, with steep slopes. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces.

Their dramatic setting, along with the Ifugao indigenous people, have made the area a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town of Banaue is a common travel hub for the region.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Unusual Local Feature

Ifugao Culture

The terraces are found in the province of Ifugao and the Ifugao people have been its caretakers. Ifugao culture revolves around rice and the culture displays an elaborate array of celebrations linked with agricultural rites from rice cultivation to rice consumption. The harvest season generally calls for thanksgiving feasts, while the concluding harvest rites called tango or tungul (a day of rest) entails a strict taboo on any agricultural work. Partaking of the bayah (rice beer), rice cakes, and betel nut are central components during the festivities.
Combination
Unique Cultures

Rice terraces

The region’s rice terraces are about 2000 years old and are still in use today. They were created by the Ifugao people in a massive engineering project to cover the sides of the valleys, irrigated by means of mountain streams and springs that have been tapped and channeled into canals that run downhill through the rice terraces. The building of the rice terraces consists of blanketing walls with stones and earth which are designed to draw water from a main irrigation canal above the terrace clusters. Indigenous rice terracing technologies have been identified with the Ifugao’s rice terraces, including their knowledge of water irrigation, stonework, earthwork and terrace maintenance.
Natural
Lowland Mountains
The rice terraces are located in the heart of the Philippine Cordilleras in the northern part of the Philippines’ main island. Multiday journeys through the mountains and terraces are doable, with Banaue the best place to make plans, recruit guides, etc.
