Mount Bromo is part of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, located in western Java.

Mount Bromo is 7,000 ft (2,300 m) high. It is distinctive in that the entire top has been blown off and the crater inside is continually producing white sulphurous smoke. The overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly, especially when compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera.

Hiking to the top or simply hiking in the surrounding park areas are both worthwhile. In addition to Mount Bromo, the park contains an even more active volcano (Mount Semeru), waterfalls, and amazing scenery.

Of cultural significance, the area is inhabited by the Tenggerese, one of the few significant Hindu communities left on the island of Java.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Tenggerese People

The area in and around the park is inhabited by the Tenggerese, one of the few significant Hindu communities left on the island of Java. The local religion is a remnant from the Majapahit era and therefore quite similar to that on Bali but with even more animist elements. The religion is quite low key though (certainly when compared to Bali) with the most visible manifestation of faith being the Poten temple in a sea of sand. The Tenggerese number about 600,000 and they reside in 30 villages scattered in and around the park with smaller communities elsewhere in East Java.
Natural
Volcanoes
Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is named after its two volcanoes and the local Tengger people who inhabit the area. Mount Semeru is the highest point in Java (3,676m), while nearby Mount Bromo is the primary hiking and climbing area. The park also includes large areas which are very lush and green fed by rivers from the high tops. The medium elevations are clad with much thinner forest before this gives way to the barren plateau and peaks.

Mount Bromo sits inside the massive Tengger caldera. with a diameter of approximately 10km, surrounded by the Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) of fine volcanic sand.
Hiking and Trekking

Hiking Mount Bromo

The edges of the volcano are tinged with sulphur and always bubbling – one of its many attractions. Due to safety concerns, access may be limited when there is eruptive activity. the walk from the tourist center to the top of the mountain should take no longer than 90min and is about 3 km. Once there, visitors can walk around the huge, unearthly moonscape of a caldera known as the Sea of Sand (Pasir Lautan).
