Komodo

Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores.

The park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Bisosphere Reserve, includes three major islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands.

The most famous of the park’s animals is the Komodo Dragon — the world’s largest living and literally a living dinosaur.

The islands also host extraordinary coral reefs and beaches, providing diverse snorkeling, diving, and island hopping opportunities.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Komodo Dragons

The volcanic islands in Komodo National Park are inhabited by a population of around 5,700 giant lizards, whose appearance and aggressive behavior have led to them being called 'Komodo dragons'. They exist nowhere else in the world and are of great interest to scientists studying the theory of evolution. These are the largest living species of lizard in the world, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 meters. The species is the last representative of a relic population of large lizards that once lived across Indonesia and Australia.
Beaches
Komodo is known for its extraordinary beaches created by irregular coastlines bays and inlets separated by headlands, often with sheer cliffs falling vertically into the surrounding seas. The waters are coral-rich, with a backdrop of rugged hillsides and dry vegetation. Finding your own private beach is not hard.
Diving
Komodo’s coral-inhabited waters are home to more than a thousand different fish species, making it one of the world’s richest marine habitats, suitable for both diving and snorkeling. Infrastructure is not as well developed as at more popular and easier-to-access dive sites.
