Baliem Valley

The Baliem Valley is located in central Papua province, the western portion of the island of New Guinea and a part of Indonesia.

The valley and surrounding areas offer a glimpse into what were recently stone-age villages, with the Dani people being the primary residents.

The mountains to the south provide superb scenery, but are accessible only by air and/or bushwalking.

The town of Wamena is the starting point for most tours and treks into the valley.  Homestays are possible for those who want to head to the backcountry.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Unusual Local Feature

Dani Culture

Dani culture is gradually modernizing, but traditions remain strong, especially when gets away from Wamena.

Two kinds of food are central to their diet and culture. Sweet potatoes are the most important tool used in bartering, especially in dowries. Pig feasts are extremely important to celebrate events communally; the success of a feast, and that of a village big man (man of influence) or organizer, is often gauged by the number of pigs slaughtered.

One unusual cultural feature is ritual small-scale warfare between rival villages. Mmuch time spent preparing weapons and treating resulting injuris ies. Typically the emphasis in battle is to insult the enemy and wound or kill token victims, as opposed to capturing territory or property or vanquishing the enemy village.
Natural
Hiking and Trekking
Tours and treks range from local half-day walks to 30-day expeditions deep into tribal lands, complete with tree bridges and suspension bridges. Trails typically involve a lot of up and down as you cross rivers at the bottom or a valley and later in the day go over a mountain pass into the neighboring valley. Starting altitude (Wamena) is about 5200 ft, and many trails go over 10,000 ft passes.

Some of the walks up to two days can be done without a guide, but it is highly recommended to employ a guide for anything longer than than that. Trails are marginal in places, there are NO signs, and almost no English is spoken in the villages. It is possible to hike nearly 100 km into the heart of Yali tribal country.
