Gyeongju is a coastal city in southeastern South Korea.

It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla (57 BC – 935 AD) which ruled most of the Korean Peninsula between the 7th and 9th centuries. A vast number of archaeological sites and cultural artifacts from this period remain in the city, leading to its nickname, “the museum without walls.”

Gyeongju’s rich heritage led to it to becoming South Korea’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Numerous low mountains—outliers of the Taebaek range—are scattered around the city, making for good hiking. The most famous of these is Mount Namsan — a Buddhist sacred mountain with temples, shrines, and monasteries.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Gyeongju is home to many royal tombs including: The Gwoereung Tomb, Oreung Tombs Park, Baeri Samneung Tombs, Gyeongju Hwangnam-ri Gobungun Tomb Park, Nodong/Noseo-ri Tombs Park, Seoakri Gobungun Tombs Park, Kim Yushin's Tomb, King Munmu's Underwater Tomb.

The most spectacular of these is Seokguram Grotto. This is located a few kilometers hike up from the Bulguksa Temple (see Temples). This is a classic example of high Silla art and architecture, a spectacular Buddhist site, wih a seated Buddha protected by two sets of 12 royal guards.
Temples

Bulguksa Temple

This working temple may be the most impressive temple in Korea. It is regarded as a masterpiece of Buddhist art, built in the 8th century during the Silla Kingdom period. Try to go in the early morning or on a weekday when there are fewer tourists. In front of the main prayer hall, there stand two famous stone pagodas. They are both National Treasures.

Golgulsa Temple

Located 20 km east of Gyeongju, the Golgulsa temple area is the only cave temple in Korea. The original temple was built out of solid rock during the 6th century by Saint Kwang Yoo and his companions, Buddhist monks from India. This temple contains a sculptured Maya Tathagata Buddha and twelve rock caves.
Natural
Lowland Mountains

Namsan Mountain

This historically and spiritually significant mountain only 5 min south of the central city is littered with historical Buddha reliefs carved into its rocks and boulders as well as dotted with ancient pagodas and temples. Hiking up the mountain (466 m) through its western valley from the Samneung tomb site is recommended.
