Lake Baikal is located in southeast Siberia. It is both the the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lake Baikal is so large, it contains 20% of the world’s total unfrozen freshwater reserve.

Surrounding the lake are the Baikal Mountains (west side) and the Zabaikalskie Mountains (east side).

Known as the ‘Galapagos of Russia’, its age and isolation have produced one of the world’s richest and most unusual freshwater freshwater wildlife habitats, as well as diverse outdoor and adventure opportunities.

Lake Baikal can be accessed by air or by the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Scenic Waterways
The lake itself is the centerpiece of the site, surrounded by forested mountains. Its largely unseen underwater features are the core of its value to both science and conservation. The evolution of aquatic life that has taken place over this long period has resulted in an exceptionally unique and endemic fauna and flora. As the 'Galápagos of Russia', the lake is of exceptional value to evolutionary science. The contains 27 islands; the largest, Olkhon, is 72 km (45 mi) long and is the third-largest lake-bound island in the world.
Wildlife and Plants
Baikal is one of the most biodiverse lakes on Earth, with 1,340 species of animal (745 endemic) and 570 species of plant (150 endemic).

More than 80% of the animals are endemic. Most charismatic is the Baikal seal found throughout Lake Baikal. It is one of only three entirely freshwater seal populations in the world, the other two being subspecies of ringed seal. There are over 50 native fish species in the lake, over half of which are endemic.
