Altai

The Altai Mountains are located in the western end of Mongolia, spilling over into neighboring Russia and China.

The Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is a vast protected area that includes much of the most interesting and scenic parts of the region. It is home to many alpine mountains and glaciers, as well as three large freshwater lakes several waterfalls.

The area’s numerous rock carvings and funerary monuments have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area also has interesting nomadic peoples living traditionally.

The park is divided into 2 regions, the Tavan Bogd Mountains in the northwest and the Lakes Region to the southeast.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Local Cultures

Visiting Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic families is a traditional part of any visit to the park, and is possible both summer and winter. You can stop by for milky tea or a meal while on a trek, or stay the night. Visitors can watch the daily routine of a real nomad of herding animals, milking goats and horses, gathering dung, cooking, and cleaning. Depending on time of year, you get to see them move camp (which takes a day to break, move, and set up camp).

The Kazakhs are the more numerous and do eagle hunting. They are known for their colorful large ger with rich embroidered wall hangings and their warm hospitality. Tuvans occupy the Tsagaan Gol valley and have different clothes, food, and language than Mongols.
Archeological Sites

Petroglyphic Complexes of the Mongolian Altai

The numerous rock carvings and funerary monuments found in these three sites illustrate the development of culture in Mongolia over a period of 12,000 years. The earliest images reflect a time (11,000 - 6,000 BC) when the area was partly forested and the valley provided a habitat for hunters of large game. Later images show the transition to herding as the dominant way of life. The most recent images show the transition to a horse-dependent nomadic lifestyle during the early 1st millennium BCE, the Scythian period and the later Turkic period (7th and 8th centuries CE).

Tsagaan Salaa, or White Valley, lies at the northern edge of the park close to the Russian border and is the largest concentration of petroglyphs, stone men, and burial mounds in all of Central Asia. There are over 10,000 petroglyphs in just 15 km stretch of the valley. Kazakh families live in this valley.

Lakes Region

Altai’s Lakes Region is a beautiful area surrounding three large freshwater lakes. Khurgan Nuur and Khoten Nuur are attached by a small channel with creeks flowing into the lakes from surrounding mountains. Two of these creeks form waterfalls of 7 to 10 m in height. A small bridge crosses the channel. These lakes are full of fish and many species of bird. Dayan Nuur is a smaller lake 20 km south of the 2 larger lakes.
