Hiroshima and Miyajima are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, located along the coast of Japans Inland Sea in the western end of the main island, Honshu.

Hiroshima is an industrial city with wide boulevards and crisscrossing rivers. It is also home to the Peace Memorial Park, memorializing the city’s role in the atomic bombing at the end of WWII.

Located off the coast of Hiroshima, Miyajima is most famous for its iconic torii (spiritual gate), floating peacefully off the shores of the small island. The island has been considered a holy place for most of Japanese history, and its Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines maintain a close relationship.

Miyajima is an easy day-trip from Hiroshima — about 25 minutes by local train to the port of Miyajima-guchi and then a short ferry ride.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Peace Memorial Park

Most of the memorials related to the atomic bomb are in and around the Peace Memorial Park. Once part of the busy Nakajima merchant district, this area was destroyed almost in its entirety by the bomb. Today, there are more than fifty memorials, statues, and other structures in the Park. Among the most important parts of the park are:

The skeletal remains of the A-Bomb Dome. This is the most recognizable symbol of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. In another lifetime, the building was one of the city's best-known sights for an entirely different reason; designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel in 1915, the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall (and its fanciful green dome) had a bold European style in a grimy, crowded city with few modern flourishes. Because the explosion took place almost directly above the building, the walls remained largely intact, even as the dome shattered and the people inside were killed by the heat of the blast.

Peace Memorial Museum. This heart-wrenching museum documents the atomic bomb and its aftermath, from scale models of the city "before" and "after" to melted tricycles and other displays and artifacts related to the blast. The rest of the museum describes the post-war struggles of the hibakusha and an appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons in the world today.

Unusual Local Feature

Scenic Torii (Spiritual Gate)

Standing in the bay by Itsukushima Shrine, the floating torii is the "gate" to Itsukushima. Note that whether the gate is "floating" or merely mired in mud depends on the tide. The Hiroshima tourist information office will be able to tell you the approximate time of the high tide, which is the best time to see the torii. If you spend a full day on the island, though, you should have the chance to see it both ways.

Itsukushima Shrine itself is a large, red-lacquered complex of halls and pathways on stilts, originally so built that commoners could visit without defiling the island with their footprints.
