Three Parallel Rivers National Park is located in southwestern China, in Yunnan Province.

Its extraordinary biodiversity and unusual positioning where three major Asian Rivers flow in parallel valleys. These have made the region a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Three rivers all have headwaters in the Tibetan plateau and run roughly parallel here for 170 km (just over 100 miles).

Downstream they diverge, to become the Salween, the Mekong, and the Yangtze.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Scenic Waterways
Downstream from the Tibetan headwaters, the river splits into three, each of which grow larger and more significant as they continue downstream: The three rivers:

1. The Salween, one of Myanmar's major rivers, which reaches the sea near Yangon.

2. The Mekong, Southeast Asia's most important river, which reaches the sea near Ho Chi Minh City.

3. The Yangtze, one of China's great rivers, which reaches the sea near Shanghai.
Alpine Mountains
The region is a collision point of tectonic plates, resulting in over 100 peaks above 5,000 meters and some over 6,000. The area also has gorges several thousand meters deep as the rivers cut through these mountains.

Treks into the region, most taking a week or more, are organized by various agencies, mainly from either Lijiang or Shangrila.
Wildlife and Plants
World Heritage Sites describes this as "an epicentre of Chinese biodiversity” and adds that “the region may be the most biologically diverse temperate region on earth. With a topography that ranges from low-lying rivers to vast alpine areas, the area has an extraordinary range of eco-systems and resulting animal and plant life."
