Shanghai

Shanghai, with a population of more than 23 million, is the largest and traditionally the most developed metropolis in China.

It has long been the financial center of China, and the wealth that has produced is evident in its skyline of modern buildings.

But walk the streets of Shanghai and you will find stately buildings from the 1920s built in a Western style, when Shanghai served as a center of China’s international trade.

It is one of the world’s most lively and dynamic cities, with a diverse array of events and activities available.

Shanghai is split in two by the Huangpu River:

1. Puxi — West of the river

2. Pudong — East of the river.

Public Tea Houses

Shanghai is known for its many tea houses, many of which serve traditional Chinese snacks along with their tea. Among the most popular is Tang Yun tea house (199 Hengshan Lu, Hengshan Road stop on Line 1, at Exit 4).
Global City
Modern, cosmopolitan Shanghai and be found throughout much of the city, with world-class restaurants, theater, nightlife and other urban pleasures.

The Bund. The best place to experience Shanghai as a historically famous global city is to walk down The Bund. This was once the most important financial street in Asia. Although all the buildings that formerly bore major international names have been taken over, mostly by governmental offices, the Bund a broad boulevard that is a museum of turn-of-the-20th-century Western architecture, with stately columns and porticoes.
Combination
Unusual Local Feature

Mixing of Classic & Modern Architecture

Nanshi (Old Town). South of the Bund, Nanshi is a lively, down-to-earth place whose crowded, narrow streets. In this traditional neighborhood, people seem to live in the streets--shopping for vegetables, smoking, eating, gossiping or reading.

Shanghai has an extensive collection of classic Western-style architecture, much of from the 1920s, that mixes in interesting ways with its newest buildings. Some of the best sections are along Hunan Rd, Fuxing Rd, Shaoxing Rd, and Hengshan Rd.

Shanghai is increasingly known for its modern architecture. Some of the tallest and most inspiring structures in Asia and the world can be found along the Huangpu River bank in Pudong's Lujiazui District. This includes the Oriental Pearl Tower (one of the tallest structures in Asia), Jin Mao Tower (an 88-story behemoth), and the Shanghai World Financial Center (the third largest building in the world).
