The Pamir Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southeastern Tajikistan, near the border with Afghanistan.

The area is protected by Pamir National Park, which comprises high plateaus in the east and rugged peaks in the west (some of them over 23,000 ft, or 7,000 m).

The Pamirs include over one thousands glaciers (including the longest valley glacier outside the polar region) as well as hundreds of rivers and lakes.

The region shelters a variety of rare and threatened birds and mammals, including Marco Polo Argali sheep, Snow Leopards and Siberian Ibex.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Scenic Waterways
The Pamir Mountains are home to many rivers and lakes. The two most significant lakes are:

Karakul. Karakul. This is a crater lake near the Kyrgyz and Chinese Border that lies at an elevation of 3,960 m (12,990 ft) above mean sea level and it is frozen half the year. Although the lake lies within a national park, much of the surroundings are used as pasture. The lake, with its islands, marshes, wet meadows, peat bogs, and pebbly and sandy plains, has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports significant numbers of the populations of various bird species, either as residents, or as breeding or passage migrants.

Sarez. The lake was formed in 1911, after a great earthquake, when the Murghab River was blocked by a big landslide. It is considered the youngest deep water alpine lake in the world.
Alpine Mountains
Tajikistan National Park lies at the center of the so-called “Pamir Knot”, a meeting point of the highest mountain ranges on the Eurasian continent. It encompasses almost the entire Pamir Mountains -- the third highest mountain ecosystem in the world after the Himalaya and Karakorum Mountains.

Huge tectonic forces stemming from the collision of the Indian-Australian plate with the Eurasian Plate have progressively thrown up the Himalaya, Karakoram, Hindu Kush, Kunlun and Tien Shan – all radiating out from the Pamir Mountains. Along with the Karakoram Mountains, the Pamir region is one of the most tectonically-active locations in the world.
Hiking and Trekking
Tajik National Park has outstanding hiking and trekking opportunities. It stands out as a very large protected area, with a stark treeless landscape of exceptional natural beauty, enhanced by the landform juxtaposition of heavily-glaciated high peaks and high plateaus with an alpine desert character. There are also some of the deepest gorges in the world, surrounded by rugged glaciated peaks, and Pamir’s extraordinary lakes as destinations.
