Cape Town

Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa. Located in the southwest corner of the country near the Cape of Good Hope, it is the southern-most city in Africa.

Cape Town has developed into a global city with lively night-life and diverse cultural activities – from theater to township tours.

Table Mountain dominates the landscape, and can be reached via cable car or hiking.

Cape Town also provides access to beaches, diving, fishing, surfing, kite surfing, and other ocean activities. Inland areas have vineyards that can be visited.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Global City
The Cape Town metropolitan area covers a large area, from Durbanville and Somerset West in the east to Cape Point in the south and Atlantis in the north. The city center is located in a relatively small area between Table Mountain and Table Bay.

Cape Town's European history began in 1652, when Jan van Riebeeck established a trading post there on behalf of the Dutch East Indies Company. The first European settlers were mainly Dutch, with some French Huguenots that had to flee from religious persecution in their home country. The first settlers soon explored the adjacent hinterland and started settling the rest of South Africa. Capetown maintains its reputation as the most cosmopolitan and traveler-friendly city in the country. It is also the legislative capital of South Africa.
Natural
Unusual Local Feature

Tabletop Mountain

Tabletop Mountain is Capetown’s universally famous town landmark. It can be hiked or visited by cable car. There is a cafe with a limited range of snacks, coffee, beer and wine at the top. Table Mountain is the home of a small animal, the rock rabbit (known locally as the 'Dassie') whose closest relative, DNA-wise, is the elephant, and you can see them running around on the rocks at the top of the mountain. Expect temperatures to be considerable cooler on top than on the bottom and dress accordingly.
Beaches
Beaches on the False Bay side of the peninsula are the most popular with swimmers as the water is warmer. St James has the most picturesque tidal pool on the stretch between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, while Clovelly and Fish Hoek beaches wrap around a sheltered bay with soft, white sands. Fishing boats, hobie cats and kayaks launch from here too. Camps Bay and Clifton also have great beaches to visit if you want to try the chillier waters of the west coast.
