Skeleton Coast National Park, in Northern Namibia, is a region known for its diverse wildlife – ocean, land, and air.

Although it is a desolate areas in some respects, with little human habituation, it is home to vast colonies of seals – often more than 50,000 at a time. The coast is also home to large bird populations.

Heading inland a few miles to the Namib Desert, travelers can find land mammals such as baboons, giraffes, lions, black rhinoceros and springbok.

The Skeleton Coast is also known for chilly and windy weather, with dense ocean fogs for much of the year.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Beaches
Virtually the entire stretch of the Skeleton Coast is beaches, and it is easy for visitors to find their own private area. Note that heavy winds and rough surf are common. This also makes the area popular for surfing
Ocean Wildlife
The Cape Cross seal colony is home to an overwhelming number of seals – roughly 60,000. There are so many, the waves of the ocean look as though they were composed of seals.
Wildlife and Plants
Namibia has established the 16,000 square kilometers (6,200 sq mi) Skeleton Coast National Park over a large region that runs from the Ugab River to the Kunene. The northern half of the park is a designated wilderness area.

The inland riverbeds are home to baboons, giraffes, lions, black rhinoceros and springbok. The animals get most of their water from wells dug by the baboons or elephants.

Over two hundred bird species are regular habitants of the coast line. These desert bird species have been an important source of information adaption to a harsh climate.

Many of the plant and insect species of the sand dune systems, including the lichen fields, depend on the thick sea fogs which engulf the coast for their moisture and windblown detritus from the interior as food.
