Etosha

Etosha National Park, located in northern Namibia, is one of the world’s largest nature reserves.

The park surrounds the Etosha salt pan, which attracts animals, particularly in the drier winter months, because it is a source of water in a very dry land.

The park is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros.

All lodging and camping accommodation inside the park is managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR).

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

Salt Pan The salt pans are the most distinctive geological feature in the Etosha national park, and the most important ecologically. The main depression covers an area of about 5,000 square kilometers (1,900 sq mi), and is roughly 130 km (81 mi) long and as wide as 50 km (31 mi) places.

The hypersaline conditions of the pan limit the species that can permanently inhabit the pan itself; occurrences of extremophile micro-organisms are present, which species can tolerate the hypersaline conditions. The salt pan is usually dry, but fills with water briefly in the summer, when it attracts pelicans and flamingos in particular.

Wildlife and Plants
Etosha National Park is one of the world’s largest nature reserves. The park has about 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, and 16 amphibian species. Large wildlife that can be seen here include: Rhinos, Lions, Zebra, Giraffes, Gemsbok, Springbok, Wildebeest, Elephants, and Jackals.

These are best seen at watering holes, which are plentiful throughout the park. At night they are lit with flood lights and visitors can sit and watch as the animals come down to drink, flirt and occasionally fight well into the night.
