Siwa Oasis is an ancient oasis town located in northwestern Egypt.

About 50 mi (80 km) in length and 12 mi (20 km) wide, Siwa Oasis is one of Egypt’s most isolated settlements. The majority of its inhabitants (23,000 people) are Berber, and speak a distinct language of the Berber family known as Siwi.

Siwa Oasis is most famous for its historic role as the home to an oracle of Amon, the ruins of which are now a popular attraction.

Other features include the distinctive local culture and desert hot springs.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Cultural
Unusual Local Feature

Siwa Culture

Traditional culture of Siwa shows many features distinct from the rest of Egypt. It is one of Egypt's most isolated settlements, with 23,000 people, mostly Berber speakers. This isolation has led to the development of a unique culture which was shown in its pottery, costume, styles of embroidery and, most notably, in the silver jewelery worn by women to weddings and important occasions. Until a tarmac road was built to the Mediterranean coast in the 1980s, Siwa’s only links with the outside world were by arduous camel tracks through the desert.

Agriculture is the main activity of modern Siwi, particularly the cultivation of dates and olives. Handicrafts like basketry are also of regional importance.

Archeological Sites
Siwa Oasis is filled with archeological sites. These include the fragmentary remains of the Temple of the Oracle, with some inscriptions dating from the 4th century BC. Other important sites are the Gebel al Mawta (the Mountain of the Dead), a Roman-era necropolis featuring dozens of rock-cut tombs, and "Cleopatra's Bath" (an ancient natural spring).

Unusual Local Feature

Desert Springs

As suggested in its name Siwa is an oasis, developed around springwater bubbling up from underground. There are several places in the surrounding area where visitors can see this in action.

Bir Wahid is the largest of these. Located 12 km southwest of Siwa, this springs provides both hot and cold water. The cold spring is lake-sized with very cold and clean water that is refreshing on a hot day.
