Memphis is a town on the Nile River, roughly an hour south of Cairo. While close enough to Cairo to be done in a day-trip, Memphis has its own distinctive features that make it a worthwhile destination in its own right.

Most importantly, Memphis, as the capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt and is the center of large concentration of ancient monuments that collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This includes some extraordinary funerary monuments, including rock tombs, ornate mastabas, temples and pyramids.

Among the most famous of these is the Colossus of Ramesses II. Another important site is the main ancient necropolis of the city, located on the desert plateau at Saqqara.

Overall Atmosphere: Combination
Combination Atmosphere destinations combine elements of both cultural and natural destinations, where this combination is itself essential to the travel experience. Common examples are Archaeological Sites (where culture is usually experienced outdoors), Scenic Local Markets (where indigenous cultures interact outdoors), Hotsprings and Vineyard Areas (where nature provides the raw materials but humans create the surroundings), and Unique Cultural Landscapes (where humans and nature interact in innovative ways, as in the elaborate rice terracing systems of Asia).

Combination Interests typically fall somewhere in the middle of the three types of primary interests in terms of
(a) how climate-dependent they are
(b) how accessible and physically demanding they are.
Featuring both cultural and natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature

In addition to its tombs and temples, Memphis also has two historically significant pyramids:

Saqqara. The necropolis of Saqqara was built as a mausoleum by Djoser, the founder of the Third Dynasty. This was a transformation of the earlier tombs, shaped like great brick rectangles, with the walls sloping inward and a flat roof, commonly referred to as mastabas. For the first time brick was replaced by stone.

Dahshur. The founder of the Fourth Dynasty, Snefru, transformed the structure of the tomb once and for all by choosing the now familiar pyramid shape with a square base. The current entry path leads to a plaza known as the Courtyard of the Jubilee. One side of this is occupied by a great stepped podium upon which were arranged the thrones of the Pharaoh; to the east and to the west of the podium sanctuaries were constructed.
Archeological Sites
Memphis is the English name for the present-day site of one of the great ancient capital cities of Egypt, including when the great pyramids were built. The pharaohs and priests of Ptah once endowed the city with vast temple complexes and built their cemeteries on the desert hills adjoining it to the east and west. Although most of the remains to be seen are limited on the surface, there is much to visit and appreciate with a bit of background. The ensemble at Memphis embraces a number of exceptional monuments of great antiquity.

To learn more, visit the museum, which cover both ancient history and modern Egyptian rural life.
