Kibale Forest National Park is located in southwest Uganda, near the town of Fort Portal.

It is one of the last significant expanses of moist evergreen rainforest in the region that includes both lowland and montane forests. Park elevations are between 3,600–5,200 ft (1,100–1,600 m).

The park is famous for its chimpanzees, and “chimp tracking” tours are popular. It is also home to 12 other primate species, as well as extensive bird populations.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Tropical Forests
The predominant ecosystem in Kibale is moist evergreen and semi-deciduous forest. There are approximately 229 species of trees found within the moist tropical forests of the park. Some endangered timber species of trees include Cordia millenii, Entandrophragma angolense, and Lovoa swynnertonnii. The forest understory is dominated by shade-tolerant shrubs and herbs, which include Palisota schweinfurthii and Pollia condensata, in addition to ferns and broad leaf grasses.
Wildlife and Plants
Kibale National Forest has one of the highest diversity and concentration of primates in Africa and is especially known for its large number of chimpanzees. Visitors can hire local guides for “chimp tracking,” which greatly increases the odds of seeing them.

Other terrestrial mammals include red and blue duikers, bushpigs, warthogs, and buffalo. The carnivores that are present include leopards, bushpigs, three species of duiker and two species of otter.

Bird life is also prolific. The park boasts 325 sited species of birds, including the olive long-tailed cuckoo, western green tinkerbird, two species of pittas (African and green-breasted) and the African grey parrot. The ground thrush (Turdus kibalensis) is endemic to Kibale National Park.
