Selous Game Reserve is located in southeastern Tanzania, and is the biggest game reserve in Africa.

The reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature of the larger environment. Habitats include grassland, typical Acacia savanna, wetlands and extensive Miombo woodlands.

Among the wildlife visitors are likely to find in greater numbers than in most other parks in Africa include elephants, hippopotami, African Wild Dog, cape buffalo and crocodiles.

One of the unusual features of the reserve is that it allows visitors to safari in multiple ways, including by vehicle, boat, or even on foot.

Challenging road access means most visitors arrive by small aircraft from Dar es Salaam. Train access is also possible.

Overall Atmosphere: Natural
A Natural Atmosphere includes a diverse range of destinations with outdoor-oriented features, including both water-based (beaches, rivers, lakes, etc) and land-based (mountains, forests, deserts, etc). It also includes specific outdoor activities, ranging from water adventuring (eg, kayaking, sailing) to land adventuring (eg, hiking, biking).

Natural Interests tend to be:
(a) outdoors-oriented, and therefore more dependent on weather conditions
(b) less easily accessible and more physically demanding than other destination categories.

In some cases (eg, rafting and climbing), this includes a significantly increased degree of adventure (or danger, depending on one's viewpoint).
Featuring mainly outdoors-oriented natural attractions.

Unusual Local Feature
Selous game reserve tours is the main part of southern circuit safari Tanzania, along with Udzungwa, Ruaha and Mikumi national parks. Camping safaris and lodge safaris are accommodation options for wildlife safaris. These vary from luxury to simple and rustic, with prices changing accordingly.

Note that part of the reserve remains set aside for game hunting through a number of privately leased hunting concessions.

Rather difficult road access means most visitors arrive by small aircraft from Dar es Salaam, though train access is also possible.
Wildlife and Plants
The portion of the northern park that lies along the Rufiji River is the main non-hunting destination for visitors. Many of the lodges and camps are situated along the river and lake systems in this area. This allows for some quality wildlife viewing directly from you dwelling, but most visitors take tours to see much more.
